onkyo tx-875

have just ordered onkyo tx 875 reciever with hqv upscaling chip onboard which says it upscales everything to 1080p not just through hdmi connections.does this mean connecting my sd sky + box through opticle digital connector will upgrade it 1080p? or will i eventually have to invest in sky hd ? also have sony 1080i upscaling dvd player will the reciever upscale this to 1080p or will i have to upgrade my dvd player to get the best out of my system ? complete newbie to home entertainment all help appreciated
