onkyo HD surround sound format

Hi am having some problem awith my onkyo 606 and PS3

when i turn my PS3 to linear PCM my onkyo 606 only display's PCM multichannel HDMI, not the HD surround mode. Do I assume that the 606 is outputting the HD surround ? Or am i missing something in the set up of the PS3 or the reciever ? PLEASE HELP it is doing my head in

I have just purchased a monster 1.3a certified cable to conect reciever to PS3

The PS3 does the decoding so you will only ever see Multichannel when listening to the HD formats. Press the Display button on the PS3 and it'll tell you which mode it is playing.
