If I'm watching a blu ray say with a 5.1 soundtrack and the amp is in 'Pure Audio' mode, should I still be getting sound from the sub and surrounds?

My amp has gone off to Genserve for repair because I was only getting a signal to the sub when the listening mode was Audyssey DSX but Genserve say that in Pure Audio I would only get sound sent to the stereo L & R speakers anyway.

According to the manual, Pure Audio turns off the display and video circuitry to minimise possible noise. It also goes on to show that, depending on the input source, sound output will be 2.1, 3.1, 5.1 or 7.1. It's a moot point because the amp should be outputting a signal to the sub in other modes, not just Audyssey DSX. I don't have the amp at present but I was sure that a signal was sent to the sub in Pure Audio mode and the manual seems to confirm this.

Can WHF or another 608 owner please confirm?

I have the 606 and the pure mode outputs whatever the in-coming audio signal is without any unnecessary processing meaning that bitstreams e.g. dolby digital 5.1 are decoded, pcm is left untouched and all video circuitry is bypassed - even the onkyo's display is disabled.

Stereo only is incorrect; I certainly use it for all my movie soundtracks.

That's what I thought but, with the amp away and Genserve adamant that there would be no signal to the sub I was beginning to doubt myself.

The OP is talking about the 608 rather than the 606 though.....might be different?

Just checked out the manual on line and it contains this..(hope I'm not infringing copyright)

'Pure Audio' -In this mode, the display and video circuitry are turned off, minimizing possible
noise sources for the ultimate in high-fidelity audio reproduction. (As
the video circuitry is turned off, only video signals input through HDMI IN
can be output from HDMI OUT.)

This does seem to sound like multichannel output through HDMI is possible.

Bit worrying when the engineers who are supposed to know what they're doing repairing your equipment don't understand how the equipment works.

You obviously aren't familiar with Genserve then??

Unfortunately, I am. Had a bad experience with them last year. So no change this time round either.
