Guy's

Just looking for the 'official' verdict on these 2. I can get both for the same price, so the question is, does the new Onkyo beat the performance of the older dennon??

I would really only be interested in the home cinema side of things as i wouldn't listen to much music. I've struggled to hear both amps with my choice of speakers which would be the B&W MT-25 .

I know ultimatly my listening decison will be paramount however was looking for some input from fellow forum members and the professionals.

Many Thanks

Again.

I have the 2310 and would be amazed if the Onkyo sounded anywhere near as good. The Denon was nearly twice the price new. the 608 is more inline with the Denon1910. Downside is no 3D compatibility - it really is down to you what want. I use the Denon with Monitor Audio Radius HD set up and it sounds great.

Do something differant, audition a pioneer vsx2020, listen and realise why that bullish onkyo and shallow denon are the poor relatives of this excellant understated reciever

I'm sure the Onkyo is excellent, but if 3D isn't an issue, my money would go on the Denon.....

Best receiver between £800-£1000 last year.......compared to the Best receiver between £300-£500 this year....

Again, I bet there isn't much in it really, but I'd go for the Denon.....

Pistol Pete...the Onkyo is actually the Product of the Year! not just beat av receiver in it's price bracket. I'd take the Onk

grdunn123,

I still think you are forgetting about how much influence value for money has when awards are presented. Take the tv product of the year the sony kdl-40ex503 an excellent tv but did not live upto the samsung ue40c8000 when I viewed them at Manchester show. I would also expect the onkyo 808 to outshine the 608 by some margin.

You're right, the 808 would outshine the 608 but it.s more than twice the price! The OP is comparing the 608 against the Denon as he can get them for Around £450 - the 808 is £1000.

I've just been listening to my Sonos through the Denon 1911 (digital coax) for about an hour for the first time in anger since I got it, on my Tannoy Arena. No big tweaking just flat audyssey dynamic eq.

For me the sound was just as detailed as when I demod the VSX 2020 with some of the same songs via a Pioneer BD player through the B&W MT-30, and bass and rhythms were better.

Films have also been great so far. Very realistic and cinematic and some things I've never heard before like the hiss of a marker on a whiteboard and hand against stone in Stargate.

The 2020 had a very natural, detailed, cinematic sound, but I'm not convinced it was better, and certainly not worth another £600 on top of the Denon's asking price to me, (which is why I didn't buy it).

Haven't heard the Onkyo 608, but they are meant to be more subtle now. However, I've read reviews talking aobut hiss in quiet scenes and it having an audible fan, so I didn't bother demoing.

Kinda...both the receivers you mention are at different price points....the Pioneer is about £1K.....the OP is trying to decide between 2 receivers at about £450?

Just because it's Product Of The Year doesn't mean it'll be better than last year's receiver from a higher price bracket...

For example...if offered an Onkyo 608 and Onkyo 875 for the same money, I know which one I would buy.....

No I'm not...I'm just pointing out that Product of the Year doen't mean it's the best machine in the world, just it's the best performance per pound, like def lung suggested above.

But, I still think the Denon would be marginally better, in my opinion. (Which I am entitled to give on this forum.)

Anyway,

The best one would be the machine that to OP prefers, after listening to both......

Cheers....

I definitely agree with Pistol Pete. Of course, if 3D is not a must.

Actually, I took this new Onk home a while ago and compared it to my Denon 2310. And believe me, if it is about the pic or sound quality, you don't have to even think about which one is better. Value per pound is simply better. Actually, far better.

IF I have to make a choose between NEW amps, Onkyo would be in my short list. But honestly, how on Earth could new Onk's SQ be better than last year's best amp at the price point twice the Onk?!?

I agree that the Denon would sound a lot better. However, I wouldn't buy a Denon receiver without demoing. The reason; I've set up two systems with the 08 range (1508 and 2808) and they are shockingly complicated. The manuals are awful and being a Sony receiver owner, there is no need for them to be like this. They always look and sound great though. Hopefully the set ups are now mire functional.
