well well, after much thought and deliberation, and conversation with the wife i decided to purcahse the onkyo 606 today rather than the sony 820 i was thinking about, what swung it for me was that i think the onkyo is more future proof 
connected it up to my speakers (tanny revolution R1 front and kef's at the back) went through the set up then slapped on the HD DVD of 300 then the DVD of we were solders once ...
all i can say is wow!! we were solders once may only be dolby digital but there was so much power and control that i felt like ducking as the choppers flew over head and the machine guns chatter to the left and right...
this means that the whole collection of dvds need to be re watched ... oops
