I bought my onkyo about 3 years ago,its developed a fault when running the PS3 through it via HDMI,after approx 5-10 mins without even putting a game in, picture flicks on the off then after approx 15-20 mins the picture comes back on and stays on for hours, but lately has got worse so ive stopped using it for the PS3.

I have a stand alone Blu-ray player and a freesat box that work perfect through the onkyo and also the PS3 works perfect directly through the tv.

Any ideas what could be causing this ?

I have also contacted the shop i bought it from quoting the "sales of goods act 79" there telling me i have to pay £117 in total to genserve with a £48 up none refundable plus £15 each way carriage fee and thats only if the problem is what they think it could be.

Thanks :(

The shop is quoting you for a new hdmi board in the onkyo. It is a common fault on the 606 where the capacitors on the hdmi board fail.

If your lucky it may not be this fault, but if it is then all output through hdmi will fail (sound & video) at some point.

I would contact the shop again and say this is a common DESIGN fault and you want it repaired for free.

Good Luck

Thanks for your replys guys, yes I tried swapping leads and ports.

Yes that's exactly what the email said it was, I received an email today stating I'm wrong abt my rights and that my legal rights was only within the 2 yr warranty, i told them I'm pursuing this within my statutory rights ( sales of goods act ) and if its a manufacture fault then I will not incur any costs, there reply was its not a manufacture fault , its a chance fault !

So do i get my own independent report or let genserve do it ?

Can i name the shop ?

Thanks again .

Unfortunately my friend had his hdmi board replaced only for it to fail again. There is alot of info/complaints online about this.

If you get it replaced ask for a warranty on the hdmi board.

Had a similar problem with me Onkyo 606 and PS3. I managed to sort it by changing some of the settings. Can't remember exactly but it is in the menu with upscaling etc on the amp. You need to switch everything off including deep colour etc and set HDMi as through. It sorted it with mine.

I have an Onkyo 905 and Genserve replaced my HDMI board promptly and efficiently. When the board fails none of the HDMIs work at all. Have you tried plugging the PS3 into a different HDMI into the Onkyo eg DVD etc? Try playing a blueray movie through the PS3 as a test.

Best Wishes

Chris

Hi chris

Well I seems there's alot of ppl with same problem having searched the internet also ppl with an Xbox , I read that it could be to do with my PS3 set to 1080p so I turned that off in the settings on ps3 and selected 720p and its been working fine all day , but now I'm confused cos I've never changed my setting for a long time, so could a PS3 update be the cause ?

I will set the PS3 display settings back to 1080p and see if the problem comes back !

Thanks guys

Having ran the ps3 through the onkyo at 720p for 3 days with no problem , I then changed the display setting on PS3 back to 1080p and it started showing the same problem again .

So is this a problem with the PS3 or the onkyo bearing in mind I've ran it at 1080p for nearly 2 years !

Has a psn update done this ?

If anyone knows if its a ps3 issue or onkyo I would be grateful.

Thanks.

Well you answered your question yourself: the PS3 is probably the only one outputting at 1080p, so a higher-bandwidth signal than the other devices. That is why the other devices do not fail (yet), and why the PS3 works fine if you use a lower quality/resolution setting.

I fear it is indeed only a matter of time until the caps are so degraded that they can't handle 1080i or 720p signals either.

Several days later and a few emails the shop I bought the onkyo from have written to onkyo on my behalf, although the shop says they've never heard of this fault before, which I find hard to believe considering when you Google it there's loads with the exact problem, I will post the outcome as soon as I have a response .

Only just seen this - although my PS3 has had only limited use of late, I have used it within the last few weeks and it wsa outputting at 1080p and no issues through my Onkyo 905. So whatever is causing the issue isn't a general Onkyo issue.

Hope you get to the bottom of it.

My Onkyo 606 has the HDMI card problem, and I've been quoted £60 labour and £12.50 parts from Gen serve, Their carrier charges are too high for me, and they have said i can sort out my own carrier.

Somewhere on this forum someone said 'Don't talk to me about Genserve' but while I waited 24 hours for a password so I could write on this forum, I can't find my way back to the comment about Genserve!

As this HDMI card seems to be an inherent fault, I emailed ONkyo to see if they would contirbute towards the repair cost. My Onkyo is 6 months out of guarantee. They haven't bothered to reply.

Does anyone have good or bad experiences with Genserve. Has anyone ever had a reply from Onkyo?

Can you give me a link to the HDMI board online complaints you menion please? I've been told the repair is only guaranteed for 3 months - that's expensive if it fails again!
