Old, wired Squeezebox. Good for Apple Lossless at all?

Is there any software which will convert ALAC tracks "on-the-fly" with reasonable results on the older, wired player? (I'm assuming that there were never any upgrades issued to do this more directly.)

Or is there any other way, shy of converting the files wholesale to MP3?

Grateful for any help!

I can't find a maufacturer's code for it; pointedly it has Slim Devices, not Logitech on the chassis, but has the two digital outputs and headphone socket.

But thanks, nads, for the forum tip. 'Hadn't thought that one through...

I should add that, while the player is badly marked, I can't see that there is any obscured code.

The free Squeezebox Server software that is required to drive the Squeezebox players transcodes .M4a on the fly.
