Old Turntable Ressurection

Hi all,

I have recently received a Maratnz Model 6270Q turntable and am just wondering if anyone can advise on the ideal Cartridge to get for it.

The original is still there but the actual needle has been snapped off, there is also a spare Shure Cartridge with it alas there is no model number on it and the needle is bent quite badly so I really don't want to try it on my vinyl.

I don't even know how much I expect to spend so I don't even have a budget in mind, obviously the lower the cost the better

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I'd suggest starting with something like an Ortofon OM3E or OM5E, which will cost you around £35 or £45 respectively, or if that's too rich for you maybe the Goldring Elan, which you can find for under £30.

Well, starting off at the absolute bottom, there's the Audio Technica AT-91. A basic cart, but sounds nice (if not overly detailed) for about £20.

Moving up, there's the Audio Technica AT-95E and Goldring Elan for around £35, both nice carts. Both will offer more detail and a clearer sound than the AT-91.

At around the £70 mark, there's the Audio Technica AT-120E and Ortofon 2M Red - the AT is more neutral and the 2M Red brighter and more forward, but both excellent carts.

Above that, the sky's the limit.

Looking at piccies of the Marantz, I would probably suggest either the AT-120E or 2M Red, depending on taste, being a good match for the turntable. If funds are limited, try to stretch to the AT-95E - it's a great little starter cart.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I think I'll try Andrew's suggestion of the Ortofon OM5E and see how that works for me, then once i get used to the sound of the TT I might try a few different ones.
It's been a while since I've listened to my Vinyl so I'll start off slowly.

What amp do you have? Does it have an on-board phono stage?

gpi, I am using an STR-DA1200ES (I got for free recently) and yes it does has a phono stage onboard, I know it's not a very high end stereo amp but when it's free it's hard to justify spending money on a new amp.

Great, enjoy your vinyl sessions. The good thing about the Ortofon OM is you can just upgrade the stylus at a later date so you'll only have to mount the cart once. 😱)

Thanks for that, I am probably going to go for the OM5E for starters just to get back into the "groove" - excuse the pun, couldn't resist

It's one thing ordering it but living in Ireland the shipping is usually the same price again !
