Hi Guys,

Taken delivery of a HK AVR 255 Amp today which is rated at 8 ohm.

Am having 5 Scandyna micropod speakers rated at 4 ohm delivered tommorow and have only just realised the mismatch...

however looking at HK's site I found an FAQ as follows -

Can my surround-sound receiver handle a 4-ohm load?

All
Harman Kardon Audio/Video receivers can handle most 4 and 6 ohm
speakers on the market today. However, there are some manufacturers'
speakers that have a minimum impedance well below the 4 and 6 ohm
nominal impedance. In this situation, the receiver will protect itself
by going into standby mode. This will not damage the speakers or the
electronics, but it is an indication that the speaker in question is
not compatible with our receiver. Note: The continued use of the
receiver with speakers that cause it to shut down can result in
eventual failure of the receiver which is not covered by the warranty.

So does this mean it's all okay? the micropods are rated 86db spl (1w @ 1m) 4 ohm. compatible with amps from 10w - 100w

Thanks for your help!

Nick

It depends how stable the impedance of the Micropods is. If it doesn't dip too much from the nominal 4ohms, you'll be fine; if it does, and the Harman manual isn't being overly cautious, it may trigger the protection circuitry.

I would set your amp to the lowest amps u can you should be ok (if you can get them very close to one another)............ but there is still a risk of causing damage.

My amp has 8 and 6 ohms settings, my speakers are 6 ohms so I of course set to 6.

The only way to be completely safe is to buy speakers which match your amp .

Thanks for your replies guys.

Unfortunately I've now purchase so will have to hope it is all okay.... there seem to be a lot of instances where people have a setup not disimilar to this and it all works fine

If in doubt, try to avoid 'cranking the sucker' - to use the technical term - and you should be fine.

You have been listening to the ohm service...

Surely you were practising ohmeopathy?

very good guys!

won't be cranking it up too high for the sanity of our neighbours anyhow!

in essence these speakers will just work the amp a bit harder?
