Nord?

I’ve just ordered a Nord One power amp to drive a pair of new Linn 119s (not bought yet) and wondered if anyone has any recent experience of using a Nord or similar in their system. My plan is to start passive and then go active with the Linns at some point. I would then move the Nord on, so it’s a bit of a stop gap purchase.

I once owned a Nord several years back and it drove a pair of ATC scm11s easily although ultimately I tired of the sound and replaced both with AE1a. Linn seem to like neutral sounding amps and are now using type D hypex based amp modules in their Selekt players, I believe. The Nord is both cheaper and more powerful than one of the Linn cartridge plugins.

You may recall I had a Nord One NC500DM MKI Dual Mono Stereo Amp. Not the snappiest title for a product!

That was a Hypex module based design, with Rev C board and Sonic Imagery op amps. I bought it used and sold it after a couple of years to get my Pass Labs. No recent experience though there’s a very recent test on the ASR forum.

They’re still going, though I’m not sure if it’s still owned by Colin who used to post here. (Was he Boggit or something?)

A few reports of odd QC issues, but if it works it works!

It looks like Colin is still there.

They have a wide sellection and prices and from a little 25watt ish for nearfiled like the speakers thomas & stereo makes, to something that can handle big hard to drive speakers

Not to expensive £320 for there 2 x 75Wrms 8 Ohms, 2 x 125Wrms 4 Ohms, 2 x 115Wrms 2 Ohms Nord Value-Line MP NC122 Stereo Power Amplifier

Seems very reasonable when it's a noisy pa amp

Hi Nopiano. Thanks for the reply and I do remember you having one some time back (like myself). Our speakers have been active for several years now and I’m about to dip my toe back into the world of passives, albeit for a limited time (maybe) until funds allow for driving the Linns actively. I managed to source a 2nd hand Linn Selekt with Organik line out cartridge a few months back and then I started reading very good things about the new Linn speakers. I decided to hear them for myself and found them very engaging. Lovely highs and midrange without any sense of edge or glare. The bass, however, was a bit woolly compared to my present actives (which are very tight).

I was also surprised at how much bass there was - I think that in the past, linn speakers have often been light in the bottom end …. not anymore. Decided they might need more power and thought I’d take another punt on a Nord Hypex. I’ve just read the latest review on the ASR site and it’s pretty sh*te. Hope it was a bad sample as I’d literally just bought the same model!

Anyway, soon after Christmas, I’ll get hold of a home demo pair of 119s and hook them up to the Nord. It’ll be fingers crossed, followed by a big smile …., or back to the drawing board 😉

Yes. The prices do look very reasonable on their website, although there is a sting, I discovered….. the prices do not include VAT.

£384.00 less then a Denon PMA-600NE costs in Denmark

Still not bad but outside of euros it could easily be alot more then £400

Not much inside but add a wiim stream i imagine you get better sound then a wiim ultra, alot of space for the hot air compared to wiim amps (no pictures of the power supply on there website)
