Noisy NAS ?

Hey bought a Dlink DNS-320 and had it for about 6 months, amazon have agreed to return.

The problem is, the fan wont stop, it goes off all the time, and stays on, and its not the quitest.

If it went on only once and a while I would not mind, but cant leave it on, if I am sleeping ect.

Do all NAS's boxes do this, I even left the lid off to try cool it down, and it still kept going off.

No settings to stop fan, or anything.

What would you sugest, remove the fan and invalidate the warranty, or return and buy something else.

Got 70.00 to spend, would prefer something I can HDD to, but was looking at the WD 1TB one for 70.00 in currys.

A lot of NAs use bog-standard cooling fans, that are cheap and noisy. These can usually be easily swapped out for quieter fans that greatly reduce the noise - these often cost around £5, a good investment. However, this does invalidate your warrenty... Also, a number of NAS allow the user to tweak fan min/max speed. This can reduce the noise levels as well, but can result in a hotter unit with reduced lifespan. However, combining this with a slower rotating quiter fan offsets this. The important thing is to match (or overmatch) the cps of the fan.

Another, much, much more expensive option is to swap to flash disks - these can often be run without fans.

IIRC the Buffalo LinkStation mini is fanless and QNAP have a range of fanless NAS.

On the setting there is a Max and auto and mid, but not min, tried them all and it still goes off.

I think its either buy a new fan, or return to amazon and try another make.

That's what I had to do with my ReadyNAS. It is now on a shelf under the floorboards in the hallway. It was in the cupboard under the stairs but could be heard in the kitchen, Only faintly but once the noise was picked up then it became annoying.

Hmm... My NAS drives sit on a shelf on the AV rack in plain view. Never heard a peep out of them yet.

Try blocking port 6881 (the standard p2p port) on your router, so ur NAS doesnt receive incoming traffic and keep waking up.

Other people seem to say it fixes the bug on the dlink forums.

If it is under the downstairs floorboards, I would be wary of damp and particularly excessive dirt/dust carried/stirred up by the through draft (from the airbricks).The fan will be particularly attractive to these guys.

My ReadyNas makes a racket, I lasted about 3 days with it in the lounge and had to relocate it to a cupboard.

Andrew - I'm amazed yours is so quiet that you don't hear it even in the same room - may I ask what make it is?

I blocked the port, and it seems to only go off now and again and turned off P2P.

Thanks for telling me that, if all your guys NAS are going off, I might just leave mine then, thought mine was faulty, or garbage.

If you have a NAS in the same room as you and You cant really hear it, please let me know, what make and model it is, but can only spend 100.00 MAX!

Netgear ReadyNas Duo. About four months old.

Am currently sitting on the sofa that the NAS is sitting behind and can't here it at all. The fan goes for about five seconds on startup / reboot, but other than that it's unnoticeable.

Have just this second played a film from it with volume muted to test. Still not a murmur.

Buffalo linkstation live. It sits on a wooden floor, behind the sofa and I rarely hear it. The only time I hear it is if there is no other sound in the room and it's being scanned by my AV software.
