I've noticed watching our new 428XD TV via Sky box that there's visible noise particularly around station logos, etc - like a tiny swarm of insects around graphics and text! When the guy delivered and hung our TV on the wall, he just left the cables in a big heap, so I disconnected them, spooled the excess length and cable-tied to keep everything neat. Is it possible that tightly spooling up the cable could introduce picture noise? The Sky box is connected via Scart and the cable is a decent one, QED Sqart 5m. Or is it more likely that it's the quality of broadcast and/or Sky box (ours is a very old digital, soon to be replaced by a new Sky+ box). It seems that ITV is worse than BBC1, for example?

Its a combination of your old Sky box and the broadcast quality I should imagine. ITV is ALWAYS worse than BBC - they use more compression, and you will find that ITV3 and ITV4 are even worse. Your new Sky box may help, but otherwise its a matter of keeping decent viewing distance until the quality of broadcasts improves. Whats it like on DVDs?

Yes, I think you're absolutely right. Watching Channel 4 is really clear and sharp with no noise at all, and DVDs also.
