Well having a dilemma about my next TV

Its going into a dark room and I was looking at a screen size of between 46" and 55". The main purpose for the TV will be Blu ray and Sky HD although I will use it for gaming and 3D.

I previously had a Samsung UE46C8000 which is a great HD tv but suffers from cross talk on sky 3D content.

So I was potentially looking at a Plasma for a change but open to LCD/LED again, the TXP50VT30 was one set that seems to have very good reviews, my other considerations were the Phillips PFL469705 although this seems to have had alot of issues in the past reading forum comments. I'm going to view the Samsung UE46D7000 and UE55D7000 or 8000's. I Did pop into Sevenoaks and the Samsung showed great colour although the grass on a racing channell looked luminous green! the panasonic had a better natural look but I have a feeling they sway more towards Panasonic at Sevenoaks and possibly the Samsung was calibrated to seem too bright and colourful?

I will be going to a Samsung specialist dealer who also sell Panasonic TV's so I'm expecting to see the Samung in all its glory and the Panasonic with its out of the box settings although they are supposed to be good.

However with my mind geared towards one of the above sets I then popped into a Curry's megastore (wow they are huge) and saw a LG 55LW650T which was pretty impressive 3D wise and was pleasantly surprised with the set all together as i've never been a fan of LG. So now I have three sets in contention, panasonic, samsung and LG and not even considered any Sony sets. The panasonic isnt the best looking TV in the world, but as it will be a dark room and not on general display the looks arent too important, the GT30 is a better looking set.

Any thoughts and suggestions from anyone, would it be worth considering a Samsung Plasma or doesn Panasonic win hands down here?

I really liked the Panasonic GT30 & VT30, but I must say; LG's passive 3D sets impressed me the most: no crosstalk & extremely comfortable to watch 3D. The glasses are lighter & cheaper as well, & do not need charging unlike the active shutter ones.

Yeah thats what I liked about it, thing is I really didnt want to like it as its LG but it was pretty good. I think i'll go and have a look again and see if I can look at other 3d content rather than the content that shows 3d off best.

What are LG's like for HD performance?

LG of late has been coming up with excellent TVs at a superb value. They're hard to beat on performance per pound. This is the review of the 47-inch version of the TV model you've seen: http://www.whathifi.com/review/lg-47lw650t

Don't forget that LG is the largest LCD panel manufacturer in the world, ahead of Samsung by a slender margin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_Display

I am also in the same shoes as you. Looking to buy lg 55 650t because i think passive 3d is the way to go atleast for the normal size family. The review for the 47 inch version was very re insuring but still waiting for some feed back on 55 inch. Please keep us updated on your findings. Also Toshiba is making a passive 3d in 47 inches. Any one knows any thing about that????????

Hi

The Panasonic 55VT30 has an extra contrast filter that slightly reduces the picture's brightness, which is said to make the GT30 a better choice in a bright room (but the max size of the GT30 is a 50in). Those in a dark room such as yourself the Panasonic VT30 is said to be the better choice.

I had a demo of the Samsung and I thought it had a really bright picture too, so I asked what setting the picture was on and it was on dynamic, and once it was on normal/standard the picture looked much better to me. So if you have another demo of the Samsung it is definitely worth asking what setting the picture is on.

The Panasonic plasma definitely has better blacks than the Samsung plasma, that said I was impressed when I saw a Samsung plasma recently. It is definitely worth taking your own Blu-rays and comparing them with your own disks, I find it much easier to see which one I like best that way, and makes it easier to see any isssues the TV might have. I personally like the Sony 55HX923 best in 2D, but plasma is said to have the edge in 3D.

Well had a brief demo of the UE46D7000, very good tv. As always the Samsung D7000 and D8000's always produce a great HD picture, Panasonic Plasma's will always produce better darks but I feel Samsungs produce better whites. The samungs are great for Apps etc and the new user face looks pretty swish with Samsung also set to launch a rentable film app and access to 3D content over the net!

Why so many stores leave them in Dynamic mode I dont know as the colours are just OTT, could someone explain to me the reason Samsung has a dynamic mode? In Dynamic mode the Matrix feels as if you are on set and you spot how false the sets are in the film, switch it to movie mode and suprise surpise it feels more like a movie! Which makes Dynamic mode even harder to understand its use unless you like exposing your favourite films!

I was in Currys and had a little play with their D8000 settings, when I had finished with it the picture was good, well improved anyway and their little advetisements look far more natural and crisp in comparrison to the sets next to them. I got some funny looks though lol and surprisingly I didnt get pestered either!

I will be going back the Samsung dealer to see the UE55D7000 when they have it installed into their show off room and then I'll be able to get a good look at its 3D capabilities! So i'll report back with my opinion then, I have a UE46C8000 and the cross talk is an issue with Sky 3d content at times!

What I would like to see is a Samsung side by side with a Panasonic, only issue is i'd like to see them side by side and calibrated which just isnt going to happen, so the Panasonic will have the slight advantage here as its supposed to be a better picture out of the box. The Samsung 55" screens are coming in quite a bit less too so i still have a dilemma!
Additionally I want to see the LG 47 or 55LW950T but I think I could be waiting too long!
Spotted a Sony 46NX713 for £750 too which has a great pic and decent reviews, for those looking for a bargain! Not the best 3d wise I believe! Not had chance to look at the new Sony models!
