Yes Bigfish, I know you already suggested it (in Perspex), but my misgivings could be down to the cartridge.

I love that Olive wood finish. The cartridge is, at least, slightly bett than a 2M Red. ;-)

I haven't looked into the cart, but sonically how would you compare that cart to my 1042? Or is that a tricky question?

im sure i found this tt available cheaper with no cart, for another forum member!

what would you like on there? something you already have? or a new cart?

Sorry, missed this for a moment, crossed posts. As said, I have the 1042, which I'm very happy with, but then, I don't know any better *biggrin*

Not really. It's usually fitted with a 2M Silver, which is a modified Red as I said, but to me this is still too 'forward' and you're better off with your 1042 particularly as you are used to the sound and it's a much better all-rounder, in my opinion.

It may be possible to get a discount if you ask them to remove the Silver. ;-)

Too many decent decks ruined by the inclusion of a sub-standard cartridge these days I feel but they are maybe a starting point that newbies require and are adequate because they know no difference and are tagging them onto a cheap set-up anyway.

It's interesting to see Audio Affair recommend fitting a 1042 or a 2M Bronze. That gives you some idea of equivalents.

I'm not a fan of the olive, bit to dark for my liking.
I am a huge fan of the walnut though ;-)
As others have mentioned the first thing to go was the 2M Silver in favour of a 2M Black.
Mine is really coming into it's prime now - stylus nicely run in and everything settled for about 6 months.
Really big fan of the Lehmann Black Cube SE it's coupled to as well.

Nice. Does it have a lid?

Nice album too.

The plot thickens *yes3* I've just been looking at the 'Inspire' website, got me thinking about doing a 'number' on my Planar 3. As said, my Planar 3 has issues with the arm and speed stability. Speed stability on it's own is probably an easy fix, but the arm has an intermittent fault. It seems to go through periods where it will suddenly jump back as it enters the run-out groove at the end of the record. This too might be an easy fix, if I knew what I was doing. In any event, going the 'Inspire' route gives the opportunity to have a new motor and have a tonearm upgrade*, along with a plinth of my choice. At this stage I don't know what the cost might be, I'll need to have a chat with the man.

(*Thinking along the lines of an Audiomods series 5, as it's Rega based)

Sorry for all this meandering. Bloody turntables! *dash1*

Re the jumping back, is the arm lift getting too close to the underside of the arm? Or maybe the bias/anti-skate is set too strongly. Rega arms need barely half the recommended amount in practice.

Thanks for your reply about the Michell earlier. Quite understandable - there is no lid, though their own Perspex thingy keeps it fairly free of dust.

I'd look at that 'classic' model Project, with a better cartridge and mat - hifi news preferred the cork mat.

Regarding the arm lift, it was the first thing I checked. I've also tried different bias settings, made no difference. It's strange, when it's going through one of these episodes, if I lift the tonearm by hand, I can actually feel it trying to return towards the outside from a central position, weird.

Sounds like one or the other to me. Either that or the antiskate is screwed. Either way, your rega dealer should be able to help.

Yes, but if I go the 'Inspire' route, I can take the opportunity to upgrade the tonearm

Quite so and Audiomod arms are good. As yo stat before the bias on Regards arms is spring delivered so maybe it's goosed.

Their are many tonearms that can fit old, pre-three point mount, if this is what you have and I guess it is. I'd suggest you also look at Origin Live arms along with the Inspire plinth / motor.

Love the White Stripes. Have you seen the documentary of them touring the small gigs backwater gigs in Canada, well worth tracking down. Yup, certainly ships with a lid. Also bought a nylon cover from Malvern Audio to protect against moggy debris as she like to sleep on it !!

They do pick the strangest places don't they?

at 'Inspire' today, lovely chap. Carrying out their full/regular package plus a new motor comes in at around £700. On top of that will be a new tonearm, so around another £700 if I went for the Audiomods series 5, which I'm inclined towards. This would be a 'blind' buy, but I've heard nothing but good things about 'Inspire', including accounts on this forum. Seriously tempted *smile*

Robert's a good guy, but not the most reliable at answering emails.

That's ok, I don't mind using the phone in this instance, in fact I prefer it. Gives me a chance to have a good natter *biggrin*
