New System

Hi, I've been without a system for a couple of years, but now I am in a position to spend about £2500 on a system, although my budget could be pushed a little bit higher. Anyway, I need an amp, cd and speakers. My room is about 4 metres by 4 metres, so I think I'm looking at bookshelf speakers. I listen to things like female vocals, show soundtracks. I want something that gives me exciting involving listening without having to be played too loud. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I have given your question a lot of thought... There aren't many 'obvious' choices at this 'midrange' price level. I personally prefer systems made - inasmuch as possible - by the same manufacturer, so that I know the synergy is perfect and you don't have to wonder afterwards whether a better mix'n'match solution could have been found... I think it is too time-consuming and relative to do that searching and mixing yourself, but I prefer the manufacturer to do that for me... Of course it would have to be a reputed trustworthy manufacturer of the highest rank...

Having said all that, I believe the system that has been most highly reviewed in several specialist magazines is the all Quad 99 series system. This is made up of components from the Performance Series (http://www.quad-hifi.co.uk/ranges.php?sector_id=2): the 99 CDP-2 CD player + 909 power amplifier + 12L2 standmounts. This exact system has been called a 'musical genius' by this very magazine while it has received numerous others stunned reviews from at least two other prestigious magazines. Not only hs this system a perfectly balanced and detailed sound but it is extremely flexible. The CDP-2 is not only a cd player but also includes a preamp (output volume) and most importanlty has digital inputs should you decide to play you DAB radio or computer music through its high quality DAC. The 909 amp is extremely powerful (140 W per chanel) and is regarded as one of the best for its price. And the important thing about the 12L2s - besides the fact that they're already established standmounts - is that the work in perfect synergy with the Quad electronics with which they were developed, and thus sound far above their price range.

This is a perfect, modern and extremely flexible system (should you have other digital sources) and it is quite improbable you will find a better one for the money. Its total price is 2400 quid - so you are left with 100 quid for some good stands.

I think I've settled for Cyrus electronics -CD6s and Amp 6vs2; any recommendations for speakers?

I'm going through the same agonies, I, too, have settled on a Cyrus CD6 and 6vs2 plus, on Andrew's recommendation, a 6 Power for bi-amping. I have heard and liked Monitor Audio RS8 speakers but in some posts being "too bright" is mentioned, so I will watch the more erudite replies with interest.
