I am looking to build a system based around a Network streamer and have pretty much settled on a Stream Magic 6. Mind you this is only based upon extensive reading as when I visited Richer Sounds last week to demo one they showed woeful ignorance and started to make stuff up. A lot of the appeal is the universal praise of the sound quality and the fact that it comes with an app which works on both Android and IOS.

So my criteria are

Need to be able to stream files from my Synology NAS (approx, 75GB of music)

Need to service two sets of speakers (one of which will be outdoors)

May include a CD player

Total budget of max. £2k (including interconnects etc.)

My current thoughts were

Cambridge Audio Stream Magic 6 streamer

Marantz PM6004 Amp

Marantz CD6004 CD Player

Q Acoustic 2050i Floorstanding speakers

Yamaha NSAW592 outdoor speakers.

Anyone any thoughts on the above combination? if I ditched the CD player do I really need an Amp or would I find active speakers equal in quality to the Q Acoustics?

Also a couple of questions about the stream magic 6 if anyone can answer them:

1. Does the application have to reindex all the music every time you launch it?

2. Is there a headphone socket?

3. I read somewhere that the Cambridge Audio literature says there is a degradation of files if streamed wirelessly as opposed to a wired connection. Does anyone know if this will work at best quality using homeplugs?

Thanks in advance for responses.

Hi there,

I was sorry to read you appear to have received some poor advice in one of our stores.

Our customer service is our top priority and therefore I’m disappointed to hear you’ve had cause to be dissatisfied with our service.

So that I can investigate this to find out what has gone wrong, please would you e-mail me with some further information about your visit? My personal e-mail address is john.p.clayton@richersounds.com

Of course, if you would still like some advice with regards to your system then feel free to get in touch where I’d be only too happy to help. Meanwhile, my sincere apologies once again for the obvious inconvenience, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Many thanks,

I've a Stream Magic 6 and a Synology DS408 and a DS411.

I can recommend the SM6 because auf sound quality!!! Whatever you choose; internet radio, pc, usb or from LAN, sound quality is 10 times better/detailled (after my fancy) than from my Squeeze Box I had before.

BUT: I have the problem, that the SM6 can not see one of the DS. So the SM6 ist not able to stream music from the NAS directly, an I can not use the great DS-Audio app.

There are others with the same problem:

Cabridge Audio Support was not able to help me in this the last two month.

Well that is a concern as all my music is on a DS211j. Are you connecting over wifi as I planned to connect wired via homeplugs

Hi - It would be worthwhile checking out the new Yamaha CD-N500 Network CD Player which I believe will do everything that the Cambridge Audio Stream Magic 6 streamer + Marantz CD6004 CD Player can do.

With the money saved on the CD player you could spend a bit more on the Amp. I use mine with the Yamaha AS-700 which I like a lot but you may have the budget to go the next model up (AS-1000).
