So, I spotted a pair of speakers up for auction last week. The aforesaid in the thread title. Put my bid in, and by some small miracle, I won them!
Picked them up today and got back home, and my word, they're really rather excellent. A smaller speaker than the ADM 9RSS I've had for the last five years or so, but they bring a stunning build, real wood finish and a clarity that the 9RSS lacks.
They're about the size of my old Tannoy DC4s, they don't lack for oomph, with plenty on tap regardless of input, but they are pure actives - no onboard DAC, no onboard preamp. I'll need to source a new preamp, one with a subwoofer input, so there might be a system rejog in the next few months as - along with the no DAC and no preamp on these speakers, there's no subwoofer input either which the ADMs have. For now though, I'll give them a good run through tomorrow when I'll have more time. First hand impressions though are broadly, very impressed, but they do need a subwoofer to fill the low-end out somewhat. That said, in a small room, they'd work a treat.
Incidentally, on the back of a different thread on here where I'd recommended the KEF LSX II - someone mentioned that they might need a sub, or would have difficulty filling a larger room. Seeing as I have a large room in which the DM5s will sit, I can happily confirm that they've ample oomph to fill the space, so likewise, anyone considering the KEFs should probably buy with confidence and then determine if they need the sub to fill out the lower end to their tastes.
Oh and great seller too, a chap from the old AVI forum days.
