New Sonos setup or existing Airplay?

I think you are going to go down the airplay route, obvious from the start!! And i can see your reasoning.

Sonos does have a radio app built in i use tunein, i agree that the built in Sonos/Spotify app is not as feature rich as the native Spotify, can not use the additional apps etc. It does have search by tracks, albums, Artist.

I hope you have read another post re Airplay issues running at the same time as yours. Good luck and let us know when you buy a Sonos in 12 months time!!
