I currently have a Yamaha DSP AZ1 which has given sterling service I want to upgrade to a new high def amp with HDMI 1.4, I paid £2000 for the Yamaha in 2002.

Do I need to spend £2000 on a Pioneer SC-LX83 for comparable sound or have things moved on in 8 years and will the new Yamaha RX-V3067 be sufficient.

I personally think things have moved on significantly in that time - My Onkyo TX-NR905 (bought for £1,100 about 2.5 years ago) was superior for movies to my previous Denon amp (bought for £2,000 about 8 or 9 years ago).

However, it will depend on your requirements, the Onkyo isn't as good with music as my Denon was, but I took the hit on that as I mostly use the Onkyo for movies. Best bet as always is to give them a listen - take your old Yamaha along to a dealer and do some side by side comparisons.
