I was considering Marantz 8005 (£600) and Abrahamsen (£500) only problem is getting to hear one before buying. Or you may find an Audiolab 8200cd new still or Audiolab 8200cdq for around that price.
why? None of those choices are near the electro! Audiolab is ok I suppose..but why buy grape juice when you can have wine?

I have Marantz now, I demoed the Pearl Lite which was pretty good, the 8005 is now a good price and its new with 2 year warranty. The Abrahamsen I think is very similar to the ECM Electro. but its new and only £500. But I've never heard one so not sure about the sound. The 8200cd/q comes out as the best cdp on some other forum under £1k.

Have you heard them?
I own two Marantz cdps..both hum...and sound very coloured..i own some audiolab stuff and it's ok..well made to a cost..that Abrahamsen? New brat on the block? Will it last? Who knows..electro is pedigree...low high end..but still high end..im sure your expectation bias with your new machine is comforting on your ears! But if you can ever try a proper cd player? You will then regret your purchase in my opinion..here's why I think this..my arcam (£800) my roksan (£600) my mission pcm7000 (£1200 new!) all sound ordinary compared with my quad cdp2 my quad cdp 2 sounds ordinary compared with my mates flash Cyrus machine..the electro is closer to the Cyrus than it is to the quad! No brainer!

Do you know the history of Abrahamsen?

I had never heard of this brand until I joined this forum..what strikes me is the owners of Abrahamsen equipment seem to go out of their way to make sure everyone knows how wonderful it is? Why? Is it so good you must preach from the rafters..no one else has your zeal? Why? I see it has some ancestry! Cool..but to have it stuffed down our throats at every whipstitch is odd? In the usa in the 50s there was something called pay ola..this was records being played by disc jockeys who were being paid by the recording company to further the artist..which was unfair as it circumvents the top twenty based on fans buying records..I'm not sure why this popped into my head but there you go! Lol..i would like to hear one of these amps..but I have a suspicion I won't be that impressed!

I'm sure your Marantz is much better than either of mine! If I gave the impression I was somehow denigrating it? I wasn't...all hifi is built to a price, they will alter the sound etc to make it more immediate? But it's made to a strict budget..the majors cdp was less so..much higher budget then (in fact those old machines are as good as new ones but cost £50) so you saying a Abrahamsen cdp is £500 and it's as good as a cdp costing say £1200 is silly..it can't do unless its loss leading..the cost of components is twice the cost price but it gets it's foot in the door? Cambridge audio do this..you get a lot of audio for your money with Cambridge audio..they can afford the risk..can Abrahamsen?

I did not say it was as good! Cambridge yes are cheap but question mark over reliability. But then many expensive cd players seem to have problems with that, I was reading about Unison Research the other day.

One of the bods from musical fidelity went to Cambridge audio..so what? Did musical fidelity fail? No....did they miss him? Disloyal people..are they really missed? As I said things are made to a budget..big company's can buy cheap..little man cant..so unless these Abrahamsen units are made as loss leaders...they cant sound as good as one twice it's price..and for arguments sake they could do this..they couldn't make many..they would go out of business..

Well it is a concern for me, I don't want to buy a cd player and then have loads of problems like some Unison owners. Its not just them but a lot others. I went to buy a Cambridge BD player, both the ones in the shop would not work, put me off the brand. My Marantz is the 63SE so about 23 years old now. Its getting on, so I want to find something newer and hopefully more refined. The 8005 gets good reviews and user feedback. The guy who has Abrahamsen had a 8005, he only changed I believe to get one matching his amp. I may hear a Rega Saturn and Naim something soon. I could try a Quad there is a dealer not so far away.

Sometimes you are really hard work. He set up Electrocompaniet, its not just some bod going from musical fidelity. You said Electrocompaniet was a high class company. Well cd players have come down in price, the Marantz was £1,000 now its £600. Was the Electrocompaniet cd player not over £3,000 a few years ago?

that's a good cd player.why change it? Does it hum? What I would do if I were you...i would get a dac magic..mines been reliable...on the whole!,use your Marantz as a transport...you can probably get one second hand cheap..if plastic penguins electro is exactly the same inside as a Abrahamsen cd player? Fair enough..chances are it isn't...i think he keen to sell it..barter with him? It would have been my machine of choice..for information..the gubbins in a dac magic are similar to their top of the range cdp..so if you like their signature sound? Go dac magic..

Arcam CDS27 can be found under £600 now. Probably worth a demo.

+1 to Arcam CDS27. It sounds great, AND it streams! Don't mind the whf review, audition one for yourself if you can.

I did demo it, I did not like it, too smooth and processed sounding to me, maybe suit classical music?

I was suggesting he auditions it. I did very well when I auditioned it along with Arcam A19 and Focal Aria 906, playing Porcupine Tree's "Anesthetize". I agree it might sound smooth if partnered wrong, but it's all subjective.

the marantz sa8005 is a very good cd player for £600 i only upgraded to the Abrahamsen 1up cd player so it matched my 2up amp that's the only reason i have kept the marantz cd player as backup just in case i get any issues with the Abrahamsen stuff that i do have but there not much in it sound wise between the 2 cd player's i would say the Abrahamsen is a little more open and a bit more detailed then the marantz but not by much

Fair enough but thats the problem he can't demo them, hes in Perth Australia.

I think what he should do is give us the cd players prices around his budget, its no use quoting UK prices if they are different in Oz. Don't even know what brands are available there.

Yes...reliability leaves something to be desired!

I could try a Quad there is a dealer not so far away.
that's a good cd player.why change it? Does it hum? What I would do if I were you...i would get a dac magic..mines been reliable...on the whole!,use your Marantz as a transport...you can probably get one second hand cheap..if plastic penguins electro is exactly the same inside as a Abrahamsen cd player? Fair enough..chances are it isn't...i think he keen to sell it..barter with him? It would have been my machine of choice..for information..the gubbins in a dac magic are similar to their top of the range cdp..so if you like their signature sound? Go dac magic..

No it does not hum, I have never had a cd player hum. It was a good player 20 years ago but transport is not one of its strengths, jitter is quite high. The tray is sticking so maybe its on its way out? At the moment I do use it as transport only as I have a dac, I tried them both and there was not a lot of difference, the Marantz had slightly less clarity. I will try the Rega Saturn, some say thats better than the Quad. Then at least I will have heard one in the £1,500 bracket, as before Ive only heard £1k players. To be honest I don't find a great deal of difference the only one I did not like was the Arcam 27 but that maybe because of the Arcam A19 amp and the speakers I was listening to. Must have heard over 10 cd players 2 years ago, if I was buying a cdp then I would have got the Pearl Lite becasue it was good and £500. The others were more expensive but to me no better and some rather flimsy build.

The name may give you a clue: "Electrocompaniet was established in 1973 by Per Abrahamsen"

The company went brankrupt in 2004, so there was no company. He then set up a new company, Abrahamsen. So its not the case of being disloyal and leaving. In 2007 a company bought ECM and got it going again.

which has the better selling name? Electrocompaniet or Abrahamsen? Electros were reviewed all over the place and garnered high praise!why isn't the name still being used? Anybody can leave the shoe shop and then say the shoes they make at home are as good as the ones made in the shoe shop! Are they? They could also send emissaries to hang around outside other shoe shops to proclaim old mateys homemade shoes are better! Cheaper! Buy these instead! My faith is with the shoe shop..so someone who founded something then left but can't use it's name? But trades on that names reputation? Right or wrong! Is disloyal to the name..i would like to hear this Abrahamsen amp and cd player as this propaganda seems to be working? As I am now more interested than I was before..i like crocs and paraboot shoes.

Electrocompaniet the company is still doing extremely well all over the world.

Per Abrahamsen has gone back to his roots with his family and the support of some ex Electrocompaniet employees making top quality equipment in a factory in Sweden.

If you want to try out Abrahamsen equipment then contact Colin at IQ speakers.

http://www.iqspeakers.co.uk/#!abrahamsen/ckbj

Then if you still think after the audition that Abrahamsen equipment sounds awful and is not worth the money then you can tell us all about it here .

Per Abrahamsen and his original Electrocompaniet team in the 70's was responsible for a major breakthrough in amplifier technology that has been acknowleged all over the world in the industry.

Hi,

Thank you for the suggestions. The cdp that is within my budget ($800-$1200) that I have access are as followed:

Marantz cd6005 $900, Rega Apollo r $1249, Cambridge audio 651c $700, Rotel Rc6 $800, NAD c546bee $700. Not much choices available and I'm leaning towards Rega which is top of my budget but my only concern is top loading. Second choice possible the marantz. The marantz sa8005 is over $2200. Too much for me.

Cambridge audio...simples
