Now we've got that sorted, can we change the subject to something more interesting........anyone noticed how many wasps there are this year?

I thought that there were less wasps this year actually. I did see a bloody great big wasp/hornet a couple of weeks ago though - the sting on it was about an inch long! Never seen anything like it in the UK before.

You might even say that story had a sting in the tail!

Don't know about the wasps but the flies in my kitchen have come back in great numbers over the last week or two .

... memory distortion where electrons passing through a medium leave a path which is then followed by other electrons which in turn could affect the final signal - frequencies are lost, decided on this while considering the affects of the "magnetic tone" which supposidly disrupts these paths.

I haven't laughed so much for years.

Electolytic devices are active devices. They have no capacitance until a voltage is applied across them. Active devices are defined as those whose properties change when used. QED

Chris

Chris,

I don't know where you got your definition from, but capacitors are considered passive in engineering circles. Perhaps hifi enthusiasts have a different definition. From Wikipedia:

Passive components can't introduce net energy into the circuit. They also can't rely on a source of power, except for what is available from the (AC) circuit they are connected to. As a consequence they can't amplify (increase the power of a signal), although they may increase a voltage or current (such as is done by a transformer or resonant circuit). Passive components include two-terminal components such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, and transformers.

Don't worry about the cables burning in, if you don't notice a difference right away and you know how your system sounds then you won't notice it.

Best regards,

Cables running in...whatever next!

Just manufacturers' and (sometimes) dealers' snake oil.

I hear the argument that cables can sound different to each other...but running in?

I love this topic..... cables, the dark art.

I think it works the other way around though, the longer you leave your system on is the worse the cables will start to sound (they'll generate low hiss), unlike the components like the amp, source and speakers. WHFsv touched on it the other month in thier greatest amps ever piece.

its to do with the flow of electrons - memory distortion where electrons passing through a medium leave a path which is then followed by other electrons which in turn could affect the final signal - frequencies are lost, decided on this while considering the affects of the "magnetic tone" which supposidly disrupts these paths.

but I've always thought its the small variations in hifi that make the biggest differences.

So your kit may take time to burn in but your cables will need a little di-magnatising every now and then though. this can also be achieved by turning them around.......

Did you just make all that up, or did you read it somewhere?

It is not possible to magnetise copper, so you will never need to de-magnetise it.

the thing that's always got me about this whole burning in thing is if it does make so much difference, and is so vital, how come no manfacturers sell items which are pre-burnt it, and surely if burning in were that important, second hand equipment would all sound better than new equipment wouldn't it?

Why people are so concern about cable burn in? Anyway we need to use the hifi equipment and sooner or later the cables will "burn in" (if you believe cables need burning in) automatically :)

Oh yes of course there are alot of burn in machines on sell. Just goggle it & u shall find. For all type of Hifi cables. I have used one before. Actually several times. Burning in all the cables in my system made alot of differnce. The sound in now some worth softer.

I don't think there are any hard and fast rules, but various components do require burn-in to varying degrees, that's why it's always wise to let a system run at low volume (without volume is OK to burn-in a DAC) for a few days before making critical assessments, particularly if £££ is at stake!

Good dealers who offer demo gear make sure it's already burned-in.

In practical terms, IME, if a system sounds bad from the beginning, burn-in probably won't improve it much, if at all. And in a budget system, burn-in may not be audible.

And as someone posted already, if you've already bought the gear, you're too late to worry about burn-in, so just forget it and enjoy the music ;)

When you next buy a new house you should leave all the lights burning for a week or two so that, later, when you switch on a light you get pure, undistorted light. This will improve the quality of your reading.

Electolytic devices are active devices. They have no capacitance until a voltage is applied across them. Active devices are defined as those whose properties change when used. QED

I was using "active" in the sense that they change their characteristics when a voltage is applied. Resistors, inductors etc don't do that in any material way. That might not be the textbook definition but it is what I meant.

Chris

PS I get my knowledge from my first degreee which was in electronics. ;)

Using knowledge from my first degree and Google:
[*]Active components rely on a source of energy (usually from the DC circuit, which we have chosen to ignore) and usually can inject power into a circuit, though this is not part of the definition.[1]. Active components include amplifying components such as transistors, triode vacuum tubes (valves), and tunnel diodes.[*]Passive components can't introduce net energy into the circuit. If you want to be pedantic about the definition of a word that's fine. :hand: However, the point is that as some capacitors change their characteristics when a voltage is applied to them it is conceivable that they might have a "burn in" as that change of characteristics might itself be modified by use. Cables no, capacitors maybe.

Being pedantic - capacitors are well known to age and degrade but are we talking cable capacitance?

I donarf luv these cable threads - how many times have I said to myself DONT ?

Hey ho. & Cheers

PS - never wishing to be rude but rather to clarify what surely is a very contentious issue which (I recon) can encourage some to waste their money when other things will have better effect (eg room treatment, positioning etc)

Spikes and placing 2p pieces in various areas of the room, as well a tin foil hat, will all make your system sound better. Oh, and don't forget cryo treatment and running a green felt tip around the outside of CDs.....
