Just had a lengthy session with Naims xs and cd5x. Lovely. Just kept listening to cd after cd and that was with my current speakers, a pair of lowly but superb MS20i pearls, still one of my favorite standmounts, even compared with much more expensive ones. I wanted to change speakers during the dem but forgot and just enjoyed the music. I post some more later.

Hello all. Posted some comments a while back on a purchase of a naim xs. 5x and flatcap. I've been waiting for some time to receive the order. Since your on the subject. A word of notes- I'm from across the pond, westwards. Anyone wish to elaborate? Mid feb. is when order was placed.

Very musical and although they don't seem to excel in any particular area as far as I could hear, sound was just right. To put it simply, they seem to take the best bits of many systems I've heard and knit it into one, cohesive, very pleasurable to listen to 'whole'.

It's been a while since the supernait and 5i but it really seems to fit right in between, which to my ears, is a very good place to be.

A nice hifi which makes nice music.

Obviously the Naim XS has made an impression drummerman.

I would be interested if you have any comments on the different merits between an Arcam A38 which i know you have also tested and the Naim XS.

I am wondering whether to go and test a Naim out but that said i am still very happy with my Arcam A32 sound.

If you're happy why bother ... but my guess (I did'nt have them side by side) would be the Arcam is the more hifi sounding product, separation, treble, bass etc, the XS is more propulsive with better timing and timbre to voices and instruments, more 'together' sounding and ultimately more involving.

Only you can say which one is better.

I was very happy with my Arcam gear until I heard the Supernait, then the Arcam gear had to go on ebay to help fund the Naim. As DM says it is much more musical I also found it was much more detailed, as I listen to a lot of classical music its the pure involvement and timing that I like..........

Only if you use the special Naim NATA tape.

Further to my previous reply I might add that adding the 5x to the xs (as opposed to my v.good but ageing denon) made a huge difference and proved total synergy as you'd expect. I am not sure how your Arcam cdp would fit into this but you could end up with costly upgrading. Great if you like the result but make sure to audition the Naim products together as well as with your own cdp.

thanks for the comments - i am in no rush to upgrade and to be quite honest am unlikely to do so for a year or two now

the Arcam seems to suit what i listen to and compared to almost everything else i tried is up there with the best at that price - but as i have never heard a Naim Unit i thought i would ask and i would never change anything without a long demo now - they seem to get mixed reviews generally

as you say if i get the XS how long before i wanted the 5x as well - then we are talking a lot of money. my better bet if i do ever want an upgrade is probably to consider some floorstanders as a change such as PMC GB1i or Spendor - but again the Neat's are superb so i have to questions this as well :)
