dim_span:30W is way too weak IMHO ... you would have to have to be very careful with what speakers you select

Can't imagine anyone in their right mind expecting it to fill large rooms with concert level volume through big demanding speakers. The use of 'Qute' in the name (rather than something like 'UnitiGargantua' or 'UnitiJuggernaut' for instance) partly gives the user an idea of it's intended use.

The first ever use (to my recollection) by Naim of a switchable 'Bass Contour' for low volume listening is (I think) another hint of how Naim see this box being used.

It seems clear to me that this product is pitched at people wanting a small, high quality, digital, all-in-one unit for the study/office/den/kitchen/bedroom or small living room.

add the cost of decent speakers plus cables etc and I think I may rather look at AVI 9.1's if I were looking for cute ... but am speculating as I have not heard either ... just looking at 'bang for buck'

still think 30 watts is weak

JohnDuncan:chebby:small living room But sadly, it would seem, not one as small as mine...

Crikey, can't believe your room is smaller than ours. It measures 18' x 13', so is yours smaller, JD?

Thats the size of room/space I am looking to fill, in the extension which has just started. As a purely audio section (ie its not the complete room size) , this unit seems to fit the bill.Whether there is enough money left at the end of the project is another issue, but given the size of the room and the units theoretical ability it appears to fit the bill.I await the review eagerly.

Uhuh. But the crucial "hifi alcove" chimneybreast depth is less than the 31.4 depth of the Qute.

Ajani:FrankHarveyHiFi:
It has a pair of phono pre-outs (as well as a digital output too).

I still don't think this will be the sort of system that people will buy as a main system, partly due to it's price.

The real issue I'd have with buying it as my main system, is the low power (30 watts)... if it was the standard 50 watts (so a Naim Nait 5i with Streamer/DAC/Radio) then it would be a great (and cheaper) alternative to a Naim Nait 5i/CD5i Combo (for those of us who don't use CD players)....

As it is, I'd rather wait for them to release a version without amplification and pair it with a Nait 5i...

But overall I must say that I am very impressed with the way Naim has embraced computer/streaming audio...

Don't let the "low" watts put you off. Partner it with speakers with 89db or more and you'll be fine. My speakers are rated at 89db and my current amp is a 30wpc effort. 9 o'clock is loud, 10 o'clock on the volume dial is seriously loud. Put such an amp with Q Acoustics 1050i floorstanders at 92db and you'll have the police at the door. Don't worry too much, they'll never get in as you'll not hear them knocking!

My views on this are similar to yours, RS. However, the normal recommendation for Naim is Spendors, ATC or PMC. These take a bit more driving; fine if you have a small room, but living in a coverted aircraft hanger - regardless of how effecient the current is on Naim - they will struggle.

actually its normally neat the nsats plus the others as in usual suspects for naim

Well I'll let you know when it turns up

Looking forward to your thoughts on sound quality compared to the 5i series....

If it sounds good, then I'll be buying a nice birthday present for my self this summer...
