Every where i look and search about the NAIM brand i`m finding that the Naim has a typical sound to it .. So what is this "naim sound" like? Also , i`m finding out that you either like it or hate it?!

It used to be very mid-forward, lacking a little air but with real rhythmic drive, drums sounded fantastic on my old Naim gear. Since they changed from the olive boxes to the new black ones I think they lost a bit of that character and became a little more "generic" in their sound, still on the dry rather than warm & lush side.

Its a sound which tends not to be harsh and analytical (cyrus), it is fantastic with foottapedness (Pace Rythym And Timing), very powerful, dynamic, not quite as revealing as some but it depends if you want to listen to music or analyze it.

Definateley a marmite thing 🙂

see my sig for my choice!!

I'll agree with Jim's findings - I heard the Naim S400 and S600 speakers with our system the other day, and these new speakers seem to have had the same treatment as the newer electronics - a warmer, more lush sound, but they do retain the dynamics of their older speakers. With these new speakers, the 200/202 combo sounded pretty damn good....me likely!

David,

As chance had it NAIM were at my dealers today setting up the S400's (the S600's were in the huge boxes wating to be set up!!), running a 202/200/hicap with sources NDX and CDx2/NDac...................................

.......................luckily my credit card limit would not stretch to th £3k. Sounded sublime with the CDx2/Ndac...................didnt have time to hang around and listen to the Ndx :-(

I think your comments regarding Cyrus are a little harsh in themselves. Yes Cyrus is more analytical, but having owned complete systems from both brands, and now a mix of both, there are similarites in pace and timing, for example, that give real synergy when combined...

Agree about the more forward sound of the old 'olive' kit though. Very exciting but also wearing over time I found...

I agree, nicely of course

The older 6vs and 8vs amps were quite lean and analytical, but the newer 6 and 8 amps aren't. The last few ranges of pre/powers are fine too.
