Arcam A28, 38, Creek Evo2, Marantz 8003 or Pearl Lite, Roksan Kandy or Caspian, Audio Analogue... these MAs do require an amp with good control to grip those metal tweeters.

Sorry for jumping in, Lo-fi.

On paper, I like the sound of these. Those amps you mentioned PP, any additions since you posted this? Do you still stand by this list? The one thing I wouldn't want would be something too bright/harsh.

Cheers...Freddy

Hiya Freddy

No additional ones since then.

I've mentioned this so many times, and with my experience of RS6s, they a) require an amp with quality levels of power. And b) try to avoid any amp that courts forwardness. So the likes of Naim (entry-level) or Cyrus, Rotel, Cambridge... are a no-no.

Rather than looking for a warm amp, look at amps that have a fabulous midrange, such as Arcam, Creek, Primare, Roksan Kandy or Caspian. Oddly they work extremely well with the Leema. I've no real answer as to why, apart from, maybe, the control and grip it has over cheaper offerings.

Hope that helps.

It does :)

When you say Leema, I assume you mean the original Pulse? I note it has tone controls ;)

Yes and Noooooooo.... ;)

Also let me just explain about a good midrange and not necessarily a warm amp.

The perfect examples were Musical Fidelity A300: A local dealer was selling one s/hand at half price, and the figures said it had 200 watts per channel. Now this is the only MF I've heard in real depth, and the overall effect IMHO, was dreadful. It was so warm it knocked the life out of the RS6s - that takes some doing - it was lifeless and totally uninspiring. Nasty.

Not quite on the same scale, Audio Analogue has a warm presentation, and I'm pretty sure in the right environment it'll give years of pleasure, but wasn't to my taste.

The Silver range is a very informative speaker, and try to feed it with warm with warm and it can stifle its natural sonic instincts, if you catch my drift.

IMHO, what you need is a fairly neutral amp with punch *but crucially* has a textured midrange. The above examples, I believe, hit that sweet spot for the MAs.

How much was the A300 original retail price?

Well it has SAP15 five legged Sanken trannies, same ones you find in Arcam and Marantz. But most likely it was voiced to be warm in the preamp. It's not Class A, typical AB from the looks of it.

Anyway, back on thread. I'm thinking maybe the PM8005 would pair well? I auditioned that paired with some Tannoy Revolution DC6T SE's, which totally lacked any weight or warmth imo. I don't think it was the amp...I could of course, be wrong

Since those fledgling days I've heard the MAs with Marantz 8003 and it sounded smooth, but from memory, as your experience, lacked a little punch. Suppose that's a good thing if you listen for long periods and you don't want the presentation to be too taxing.

If I were you, go and listen to Roksan Kandy. IMO that had the opposite effect. However, in my living room, and with certain types of music, it could sound a little boisterous.

Hiya PP. You may not have picked up on the fact that I want tone controls :)

Yes yes, I know, it's not the done thing, but it's a basic proviso. Leema Pulse did I hear you say?

Saw you mentioned tone controls but thought it was a wind-up. No, the Leema doesn't have the fabled toners.

I'll have a think and come back (outside the usual protaganists: Arcam, Rotel, Marantz...)

No, not a wind-up. A bit confused. In the WHF review, the Pulse is quoted as having tone controls?

The ones that spring to mind around the 8005 budget is the Pioneer A70 and (possibly) Cambridge 851, which states it has tone controls. A BIG however, I'm not convinced they will match well with MA Silver range or the Tannoys.

Picture of the Leema taken in the summer of 2012. No toners. Sorry.
