Monitor Audio R90s or RS-FX?

I can get a pair of the RSFX rear speakers for £200 give or take a couple of quid. I'm sure I can sell my R90s for about £60 each. Would it be worth the £80 or so outlay? Would I notice a big difference/improvement?

Hi Gerrardasnails

Yes, what are you waiting for!

Definitely! Just make sure you place them correctly (i.e. not too close to rear walls etc), as already discussed elsewhere

That could be a problem. I have the speaker cable already fitted and the speakers would have to go where the R90s are now - on the wall above the listening position. Still worth it?

I'd normally recommend tripoles and dipoles to be about 1-1.5m away from side or rear walls.....problem?

No problem with side walls but they would have to be mounted on the rear wall.

Were do you put these speakers, as I was thinking about buying them as well, but went for MS alumni.

Do you put them on the side walls beside you, or the back of you.

My problem is my sofa is right on my back wall, but I have two side walls about 1m from the sofa each way.

I am still really interested in these speakers, but so many people said, put them here, no put them there.

So left it.

Maybe I should sell my MS alumni and opt for a rear upgrade as well.

Sorry to hijack

They're designed to be used on the side walls, but work well on rear walls too. I suppose it depends on your room layout as to where you'd put them, as silly things like windows might dictate where you're allowed to put them. If anyone e-mails me a basic layout of their room, I'll happily e-mail back the ideal place to put them.

The main thing is to keep these types of speakers away from the rear wall when they're on the side wall, and away from side wall when they're on the rear wall. If they're placed to close to an adjoining wall, HF reflections from the drive units tend to reflect back quite quickly, giving away the speaker's placement. They tend to get 'lost' more if they're away from the walls. If that's clear

Sorry to hijack again. but same question for me.

Would you go for the Alumni or RSFX, as will be able to sell the alumni for a decent return as they are still mint and still have the box.

Cheers

I did yes, but was unable to reply due to not booting up my workstation today (I can only send e-mails from my own workstation). You have one awkward back wall!!

I'm not sure dipoles will work for you due to the space available. I could do with seeing the pic again - can you send it to hifi_excellence@yahoo.co.uk ? I won't have access to my work e-mails until Tuesday now, so if you send it to that one - just an e-mail addy I set up so that I could receive stuff at home.

Hi dave.

Just sent for you, thanks for helping me out.

Just seen the RSFX Guide and it says either side or flush against back wall, but it obviously does not state sitting distance.

Hi,

I have the RS-FX placed on my side walls, but after reading this thread I am slightly worried they are to close to the back walls, about 30cm, is this to close? and will it make a massive difference if I move them further away? Thanks

Very confusing all this di-pole bi-pole stuff

Any thoughts from the team that demo this stuff on the site?

Were does the team set these speakers up to?

Here is a pic of my back wall, someone might be able to help as well or might have the same layout.

http://img443.imageshack.us/i/p1010180e.jpg/ Hi Canada sometimes we are stuck with the room we have and there is no alternative

Unfortunately the one you have is problematic

I have to agree with Davids comments , as usual his experience is priceless

For what its worth , and no offence meant ,having the couch hard against the back wall is one of the worst things to have as far as room acoustics are concerned

Also your existing rear speaker positions really are doing your system no favours , the must be very obvious instead of discrete

Dipoles should be positioned on the side walls at 90 or 110deg max to the listening position

Also should be 2ft above ear height

As David has already said they should be clear of the back wall

You could try your existing speakers on the side wall at 90deg as an experiment and see how it sounds.

I would humbly suggest that you would be wasting your money buying di-poles with the room layout that you have.

Would reversing your room be an option , make the existing back wall the front and vice versa maybe more pics?

I Realise you are stuck with the room you have unfortunately

No way I can reverse the room as the other side has a fire and a chimney breast and the sofa wont fit.

I was really hoping these RSFX would be a good upgrade, as I like MA stuff and they are so cheap right now.

So they wont go on the side walls then either?

Thanks for your help
