Well call me dumb, but found them cheaper at 205.00 new with delivery, I could not pass it up and they are walnut just like my rsw12.

Will give the RSFX A try on the side and back and see what they sound like, if they are no better than the MS Alumni, I am sure I can re-sell them for 205.00 (HOPEFULLY)

mrjjinx: Hi,

I have the RS-FX placed on my side walls, but after reading this thread I am slightly worried they are to close to the back walls, about 30cm, is this to close? and will it make a massive difference if I move them further away? Thanks

Hi mrjjinx

I think those would be a little too close to a back wall. The treble will normally reflect off the wall and give away their positon - the further they are away, the less reflection you'll get. I did post up some ideas on what to do with dipoles close to walls somewhere, I can't remember whether it was on here or another forum now, but you could place something behind the rearward facing grille to cut down the amount of higher frequencies reaching the back wall. Ths could be material, foam, even tissue paper - anything to reduce the amount of HF leaving the speaker.

Normally, I'd recommend about 1-15 meters away from a rear wall.

Your room looks particularly awkward! I would stick with the speakers you have, but move them up a little more above head height. You could also, if you wanted, move the back left over onto the wall against the stairs. Lifting up rear speakers tends to give a little more height to an AV system's soundstage, and also 'loses' the rear speakers a little more in comparison to a system where the rear speakers are very close to the listener's ears.

Thanks dave, bought them now, but confident I can re-sell for what I paid at 206.00, and am sure sevenoaks will allow 7 day return as well.

Will give them a try and if it does not sound better, will sell and move the Alumni's

Thanks again

If it were you, where would you think would be the ideal place?

I cant imagine they are the same as the Alumni's, £400.00 vs 130.00.

They've got to be better,,, says with fingers crossed.

Canada

I would try them at 90 deg to the listening position , definitely need to have them 2 ft above ear height wherever you put them

Good luck

Thanks for the reply 'FrankHarvey', I could move my sofa forward and move my RS-FX further along the side wall but only to be about 1m from the rear wall, also in this position they would be 90 degrees instead of 110 degrees to my listening spot. Do you think it would be worth doing?

It depends what you mean by 90 degrees to your listening position - do you mean the angle of the speaker, or where they are situated on the side wall in relation to your listening position?

This might help

http://www.dolby.co.uk/consumer/setup/speaker-setup-guide/index.html

Shows speakers setup for 5.1 7.1 config

Di-poles should be wall mounted on side wall ideally at 90 deg to listening position this should also keep it the furthest from a rear wall. 2ft above seated ear height.

Max angle is 110 deg but this brings it closer to the rear wall , not so good if you dont have space behind the sofa/listening position of say 7' 6"
