Really looking forward to this.

I have to give a mention to Allan at Ideal AV too. Spoke to him on the phone and he seems an all round nice bloke.

Phoned for a unit this morning, I might have the modded unit tomorrow (Bear in mind the mod needs fitting and the 95 mod is apparently not easy to fit)

Only downside I see id that to get the very best out of the unit im going to need a whole new set of cables (No rush for that though)

Rik,

Been thinking of this unit myself, can you post your findings when you have had it running for a few days.

Will do

Out of the box id say its a better cd player than my Arcam CD32 (Which I think was about 1200 quid when it 1st came out)

Only problem with reviewing sound now is that ive just borrowed a Musical Fidelity A5 power amp for stereo (Which is awesome)

I am hoping to demo the Oppo early May (I have some time off), so your review will be a starting point.

Not heard anything through the A5 myself, but if it is this good with music I may be tempted for a seperate amp myself.

Enjoy your new toy.

One thing I would like to say is about hardware 'run in' time, as there appear to be many people on this forum that simply dont believe it exists.

Very first thing I watched was an upscaled dvd. It was very blurry. So blurry I was panicking a bit

Its not blurry anymore

Hi pal

I was going to wait a bit as ive still not really run in the cd player section

But as of now - very good. Ive take my Arcam FMJ CD32 (1200 quid new if I recall) out completely and use the oppo in place. Obviously, cd players and dacs are really down to the individuals preference, but its highly detailed and goes VERY low. For its price, I cant think of any cd player that could beat it for resolution and particularly for bass detail. It sounds lovely to my ears

It decodes HDCD discs too.

As for the rest -

Upscales SD content very well (As expected). Blurays definitely look better than through my sony S370 (Love to know how that is, as all filters are off so should technically be the same). Sound is more detailed (bit fed to my pre amp)

Plays nearly all movie files (MKV, AVI, MPG etc etc). The only downside ive found to this is that its a little too good at showing 'exactly' whats on the file, warts and all (Ive seen litle bits of 'processing' going on in compressed 720P content for example). That said, id still have it over the S370 anyday. I cant fault a player for showing warts in a file :p

Also plays 24 bit material from said files (Something the S370 wouldnt touch)

Not used it for DLNA streaming so unsure about that

Ive tried 2 SACDs in true bitrate streaming to my marantz amp which sounded awesome

The strange thing is (You probably already know about this but im telling you just so your aware), it doesnt play MP3 files! This is supposed to be some sort of political issue which will hopefully be addressed with an update - though this of course isnt written in stone. Oddly, plays MP3 files embedded in video though (Which im happy about else a lot of vids wouldnt work).

FLAC files play fine (Not tried any 24 bit ones, but I know people have)

erm

Anything you especially want to know?

Thanks for the reply,

I had a demo yesterday at allan's place ( very nice guy), the picture and sound was very good through his system.

Didn't get the chance to try SACD (not an issue at the time), I am trying to make my mind up if it is better than my Denon 2500BT picture wise.

If you do try the streaming and the 24 bit FLAC will you let me know, this is something I am very interested in.

Thanks again.

mp3 requires a license, so it's probably something to do with that.

The 95 has multi-channel analogue outputs doesn't it?

It has something to with the license yes

The 95 does have multi channel outs (Which I dont yet use)

I read elsewhere with a bloke saying that the OPPO 95 was so good with the multi channel outs that it made his equipment dacs redundant (And the decoding amp was $6k ish if I recall!). He was genuinely shocked it sounded so good

I think 900 quid is standard price (multi region dvd) I went with multi region bluray which is 1k (possibly a little more now)

Rik, just wondering if you'd had a chance to see/hear the 93 anywhere and offer any comparison? The reviews of the 95 I've seen are exceptional, glad you're enjoying

I haven't seen the 93 in action im afraid

The general thoughts are it has the exact same video architecture so would perform the exact same

But from what ive read elsewhere the 95 is touch more 'natural' looking, which I would put down to its uprated power supply

It definitely has better audio than the 93, and from what ive read elsewhere it sounds better than the 83 nuforce edition (Upgraded 83)

Thanks for your (very prompt) thoughts Rik. Yes, what I've read is PQ is very similar - I hadn't considered the effect of the power supply on it, but if PQ is my main priority I'm sure that won't be worth the £400 premium. Obviously the DAC is the major step up, even tho the 93 is already supposed to be very good. Have you used the balanced stereo outs at all? What do you make of it?

Is that streaming (as in movies etc) or streaming 24 bit flac?

Ill try and get everything up and running soon as for you pal :)

Sorry, it is the FLAC.

I am not sure whether to go for the 93 or 95 yet, my only other choice would be the Denon 2012 but these seem to be still unavailable here.

Personally speaking I wouldnt have a denon as theyre so picky about what theyll play. The oppo truly is a class beater to my mind and will play almost anything thats thrown at it (bar the bizarre MP3 problem!)

ben - I havnt yet used the balanced outs. Im kinda waiting for some cables to fall in my lap first :p

Purely on measurement, the dacs in the 95 are way ahead of the 93
