Finally.

Only taken me two years to get them finished, but here they are... Couple of snagging issues to sort, but they are working superbly!

The remaining issues:

Another coat of lacquer required.

Tweeters a couple of dB down on level- time to bypass the resistors I put in! (They were a remnant from the previous tweeters I used...).

And if anyone is interested, they are Vifa XT25BG-60-04 tweeters, wedged into a messy hole wot I made with a junior hacksaw and a power drill. It's a bonus you can't see the innards...

The mounting plates are two pump clips from the Devilfish brewery, which I butchered to a just-about-acceptable standard using the aforementioned tools, and a lot of no-nails.

Great to have my babies up and running again.

They look very nicely finished. You must post a series of 'the make' photos etc!

Ha ha.

Another coat, and the finish will be much better! They look great from a few feet away though.

Sound quality is very good: a smidge more top end will sort them right out... The mid is a touch recessed at present, and they're too bassy as the tweeters are too quiet. This will take ten minutes with the soldering iron to rectify, so not a major issue! I had the smaller, neodymium magnet versions of these tweeters before, and they were STUNNING. I left the resistors in place as the specs were very similar. Turns out they aren't needed, so I'll just bypass them.

I stupidly didn't think to take any pics during the build- suffice to say that, apart from the paint job and some new internal wiring/upgraded caps, I haven't done much to them.

However, I did very much regret picking the hottest day of the year so far to do the work. I had a thumping headache by the time I'd finished, and as a result didn't listen to them til this morning!

A double-whammy of goodness has occurred!

I've taken the resistors out of the signal path, and my frequency balance is perfect. The tweeters are breaking in and starting to project a brilliant soundstage- that nice, 'airy', floaty treble that seems to come from everywhere.

And I've moved house. I've gone from a boomy suspended wooden floor with no carpet, to solid floor with thick carpet. This has made one hell of a difference.

The PC rig.

Intel i5 2500K @4.5GHz, 16GB RAM, 60GB Solid-state with Windows 7 64-bit, 2x1TB Samsung HDDs, AMD 5870 graphics (overclocked), 24" DGM IPS monitor, 30meg Virgin Media connection. (OK I'm just showing off there...)

Fed via optical to an Audio Alchemy DDE v1, then to a Rotel 935BX, and Mission 780s, via Van Damme studio blue 6mm.

I use this more than my main rig, and it beats any PC-speaker system this side of serious money...
