pauladamss:i didnt get the 192 part of me doesnt really like buying s/h i bid more than the last one went for but didnt get it .if i went for a pulse id only have about £500 for cdp

Only £500? Like you should worry. To illustrate only - not recommending you buy this particular one - but there's a Linn Genki on Ebay for £450 Buy It Now right now. Not a dealer, there's no returns, it's a private seller and you can do better elsewhere (see the likes of Billy Vee in London who do a year's warranty on their used kit, or Audio Emotion who sometimes offer a five year warranty thrown in), so I'd not recommend it. However, the Genki went for £1500 in its day and could be a nice match with the Pulse. You'd be spending near or maybe a little over your budget - taking the £750 plus £450 (plus postage for the Genki) so £1220 or so, but it gives you an idea of what could be done.

On the other hand, can I just point out the Sansui AU-217 amp...proof if ever proof existed that great things come in small packages and smaller price tags (got mine for £33 delivered, and it's been a revelation over the last few months).

EDIT: Also on Ebay for less than £500, sorry, only £500...Copland CDA 266 (£465 including postage), Cymbiosis hifi (a business) has another Genki for £495 Buy It Now and this means you can buy, listen and as long as you return within 7 days of the day after you receive it, you can get a refund of your money, about £275-400 will get you the Harman Kardon HD990 CDP, which is a bit good brand new and boxed, £65-£100 will get you a Rotel RCD-965BX which is terrific for the money, £500 will get you an Eastern Electric Minimax CDP on Ebay right now, Buy It Now...and so on and so forth!

So, as you can see, you have absolutely no choice with only £500 to get a decent CD player!

i didnt mean £500 was nothing but it is considerably less than the price of a saturn .the problem is finding a shop that stocks these items so i cam have a listen

Indeed, my problem for amps for ages now. At least the Distance Selling Regulations let you do this with mail order/internet orders. You can have the items at home, try them out, and return. It's the law, so might as well take advantage of it! You get to hear with your own kit too and in your own home and this really is the ideal. Some of those Ebay options are worth a look you know - likewise some of the hifi dealers that offer a warranty.

its knowing were to start do i go out buy an amp that suits my speakers and present cdp then upgrade the cdp or the other way round i put less time into buying my house than buying av kit

Arcam is pretty much your budget when it comes to s/hand gear. Like all s/hand hi-fi stuff, it's a risk unless you can buy from known dealers. Anything less with the Pulse would be a waste.

I would be more inclined to look at Creek Evo 2 (£600); it is well matched with your CD72 and RX1 speakers.

NAD has a lot of reliability issues and design issues. I don't know if its the cheap chinese parts or poor quality control, but I've seen many owners complain about their NAD amplifiers, especially the 326BEE. I hear they run hot, have cd inputs that eventually don't work, and have the poorest volume control.

That's some poor scaremongering CSQ2...!

Yes there HAS been some issues with NAD but there have been issues with other seperates as well... That's electronics for you

I've owned NAD gear for god knows how many years and I've never had ANY issues at all... I've still got a 3020 amp up in the loft that works just as well as the first day I got it!

If you've heard that there have been issues that have been with NAD then fair enough but be careful what you put on here... Same with all makes really!

I think PP has it right; the Creek, Arcam and M/A combo would be very good but I have to pip in that the Rotel RA1520 would deffo be worth looking at as well

The Rega Apollo would fit in with both combos as well and no; it's not warm but very articulate and punchy. A very similar soundstage to the Arcam CD192 IMO
