Can anyone recommend a good media player for watching video files (not DVD or Blu Ray) on laptop and also streaming downloaded video to the tv via HDMI. I have Media Monkey for music and just downloaded GOM Player to test (seems ok and has most encoders pre-installed) Also have WMP 11 but went to play an AVI file and it's not supported so I guess it needs encoders.

Thanks, Matt.

Hm. Windows media player supports AVI files generally, but you can never be 100% sure what type of video is stored in the AVI container. You might want to get something like gspot to check your files...

Ah didn't realise AVI was a container format, cheers. Is WMP a good chioce? Have you heard of GOM? So many choices......

Haven't heard of GOM, no. I find WMP perfectly fine tbh, including (with a registry tweak) ripped DVDs*

* for research purposes - do not try this at home

I use the 'klite codec pack'

Plays 99% of all types of movie and music files

Excellent thank you, will stick with WMP.

I use VLC media player.Plays evrything you throw at it and I find it quicker than WMP.
