Marantz SR-6007 or SR 7007... anyone got one?

Yes. I've recently combined my Hifi and AVR side of things (between properties and no space for both a music and AV room), so the SR6007 Marantz is being used via it's pre-outs connected to my PM7004 integrated amp (driving B&W 684s) via it's pre outs.

I have only had it a couple days so far so cannot offer much in the way of a detailed review - but it's features and connectivity/network ability are superb. Build is excellent too (solid and sturdy, good feel to the selector knobs, no play whatsoever as I found with many other AVRs), vast array of gold plated terminals on the back, decent digital inputs (2 x optical inputs and 2 x coax digital), double HDMI out etc. I am a big Marantz fan, but I don't think anyone can argue that it's one of the best looking receivers out there. A wholly handsome swine indeed.

I've only really explored it's music / connectivity / networking abilty so far and I'm impressed. Before connecting my 7004, I spent a day listened to the 6007 as it's own amp. The DAC sounds superb - my CDs sound as good either connected directly out of the analogues of my 6004 or digitally via optical toslink. Wife loves the sound of her iDevice either connected directly or through Airplay.

Powerful and gutsy it drives the 684s eaily and well. Typical Marantz sound - rich and warm low down, detailed mids and crisp highs. That's about all I can offer so far, but I too would be grateful to hear from other who have spent more time with it.

I'm glad you say it's you rate it's stereo performance, that's where my current system is woefully inadequate.

I loaned a PM6004 last night to compare with my Onkyo and get a feel fo the Marantz sound in my living room.

Very interesting... I have also realised just how much out of love with the Mordaunts I am.

Interesting about the B&W 684's.. nice looking speakers too!

I've just spent the afternoon with those great guys at AVBristol listening to the SR7007.

We tried it with Q Acoustic 2050i's and AE Radience AELITE 3's and briefly the Radience 3's

The SR7007 sounded super sweet Ryan, and it does everything!

I'm hoping there's not much tonal difference with the 6007, as that's in my budget.

I was joined by a fellow sound engineer and we were both mightily impressed with the 2050i's..

Great imaging, really immersive sound and was happy to play anything we threw at them :-

Classical, Choral, Jazz, Electronic, Prog, Folk, Rock and Metal!!

However the AE's we're far more polite and din't do a good job with the the harder stuff!

So, positive vibes from Marantz.. AVBristol..
 
I have got the 7007 which I am using with B&W CM1s at the front and M1s for centre and surround. Ith as far exceeded my expectations of what an AV Receiver can do in terms of music and the AV performance and connections are excellent as well.

It might be worth looking at the Denon 3313 which is reportedly very similar to the 7007 under the skin but a useful £200 cheaper.

I tried to audition some 684's last week but the store was out of stock..

Instead I listened to Kef Q500 and the fabulous yet small Monitor Audio BX5's.

The BX5's sounded great, nice big soundstage with a tighter midrange compared to the 2050i's I felt..

Honestly the Kef's sounded dreadful in comparison, I'm guessing a bad match for the amp - Marantz PM6004.

I may try again to listeb to some B&W's, I may even drift from floorstanders to stand mounted 😉

I have also started to reconsider the Yamaha RX-A1020 again, am I mad..?

This whole upgrade idea came from a Denon amp - the 2113, I realised it wasn't enough amp for me.

The Denon is hot!

Almost everything I was looking for, unfortunately it doesn't have analogue multi channel inputs 🙁

I have this notion of mixing in surround in my living room....

It's also a great price from Seven Oaks too.. so close I almost touched the finish line!

It's back to the SR6007 I think, hoping it's as good with music as the 7007 ...
 
I've got the SR7007 and previously the SR7005 - sound wise I've found very little difference. I also have the NR1603 for another room and the jump in power is clear between these two, but this is expected. They sound very similar though.

With respect to the SR7007 I was driven to upgrade mainly because of some enhanced features. The clincher for me was the 2nd zone HDMI, which allowed me to simplify my multiroom set up considerably. Additionaly, gapless playback of network audio is a huge plus and some tweaks with respect to how surround modes are selected.

I use Quad lite speakers for all fronts and sub, with Wharfedale DFS speakers for surrounds and surround backs. Package as a whole delivers a great sound to my ears.

Overall, this AVR delivers almost all that I need, the one exception is Audyssey XT32 and the ability to drive an 9.1, or 11.1 speaker system. Currently, you can only drive a 7.2 envionment (I know it is a 7-channel amplifier, but pre-outs are also limited to a total of 7.2) and have to choose, either SB, FH, or FW speakers. I've FH and SB and have to change the surround mode. Marantz have alluded to me an upgrade to be offered to XT32 soon, but I don't know whether that would mean whether we would then be able to pre-out the additional speaker channels to be powered by an external amplifier.

Interesting you found the KEF Q500's 'dreadful' in comparison to the MA BX5's.........I guess this is why demoing is so important, as others may disagree (see signature). The important thing is that your own ears enjoy what is being played.

I doubt the Marantz PM6004 is a bad match either, as KEF used Marantz (PM6003/Pearl lite) amplification when demoing the 'Q Series' speakers at shows, when launched a few years back.
 
Thanks Kaledi it looks likely to be the 6007 now as my budget is being eaten by more expensive speakers 😉

It's good to hear the 7005 sounds as good though.. I could still find a refurb.

Pistolpete it was completely unexpected.

I used Kef reference speakers in a studio environment in the 90's and have a good opinion of their speakers.

I actually wanted Kef - Denon when I entered Richer sounds in 2007, however I left with Onkyo and Mordaunt Short..go figure!

I do wonder whether or not the brightness of the BX5's made the comparison an unfair one.

I now think the top end of the BX5's may be too close to what I'm having to live with now.

My listening quest has been put on hold due to an infestation of chicken pox!

I'm going to try the Q500's again along with Tannoy DC6T's and Monitor Audio RX6's.

As mentioned in my review, the KEF Q500's HAVE to be bi amped or biwired to be heard at their best. This avoids using the rear knob in the 'closed' position on the back of the speaker, as it seems to rob the speakers of their very best.

I'd imagine the shop only single wired them??
 
Definitely get to a shop and hear them bi wired or bi amped (or even with a loop of wire between each pair of speakers sockets on the back to bypass the knob in the closed position).

I promise you they will sound like a different speaker......I found cable choice changes things too. More openness and detail with silver cables, but some may find it too much....personally I love detailed sound......

I think my findings on speaker cable were in that thread too....(it was 2 years ago, and I've not been on here much recently until I saw your comments.)
 
We actually had an issue with that knob on the listen, the tweeter wasn't working on one of the pair to start with.

I will be asking for some bi amping as I plan to bi amp at home.

As to detail, I crave it!

We almost moved my studio monitors into the living room during our session, time ran out...

As an audio engineer and music professional I'm spoilt elsewhere but not in my living room.

Which is why I'm here asking audiophiles for their thoughts and ears 😉

You are right they only had one set of cables..

I found your review very interesting and it has lead me to seek more info on the KEF Q range.

I've spent some time today reading up on the range and am now even more resolute on giving the pair another listen.

I had a visit from my best bud yesterday, another audio engineer, and we put my system through their paces.

My speakers definitely sound better with the Marantz PM6004.

Although the 914i's lack lower mid, totally evident on anything with a bass guitar or toms, their bass is almost on the sub-side.

They're not terrible by any stretch, I am just craving more refinement in the mid range and a less forward sound.

So by your reckoning the Q series are perfect 🙂

My bud accompanied me on my first listen with the SR7007 with Q Acoustic 2050i's & AE AElite 3's.. but missed the second round.

I'm going to drag him to the KEF round 3, 2 pairs of ears etc...

We both discussed the issue of room yesterday too, as we both use acoustically treated environments.

Doubt the wife would want me to start adhering acoustic panel and bass traps in our living room, however I haven't mentioned it here yet.

My lounge-diner is a long rectangle W11' x D22' x H8'.. with listening position at 11' with speakers spread wide to form an equilateral triangle to the listening position.

They are at the corner but set away from the wall.

I am late to this discussion, sorry.

I listened to an SR7007 with Monitor Audio Apex A10s and a REL T5 at Peter Tysons a couple of weeks ago, and was blown away. Decided to go A10/A40, but can't afford the AW10, so looking at T5 or XLS200 (from BK). If you have any suggestions, would much appreciate it.

Reading the specs of 6007 vs 7007, it would seem the sound element of the 7007 is higher, mainly around the SHARC 32bit processor and higher quality components. I was recommended to visit Crutchfields web site for a deeper analysis:

Having not heard both, it would be inappropriate for me to say one over the other. However the sound I wanted, I heard.

I think you need to test the 684s 😉 . They continue to blow me away, especially now I have them wired to the PM7004 amp for music (using the power amp direct feature and SR6007pre-outs for AV stuff). The bass is tight, yet rich in tone and warmth, the mids have depth and detail in equal measure and the treble is balanced and crisp. Marantz and B&W is a match made in heaven, seriously.

Should you go bookshelf/standmounted though, again I can personally vouch that the BX5s are stunning with Marantz too, their sound really does exceed any expectation you might presume from the cost. My best friend (an utter CD-collection fiend) has run them with an aging (but still stunning) Marantz PM-54SE amp, and the pairing sounds as good (perhaps better in many cases) as modern equivalent equipment I've tested/demoed. A stunning pairing.

Best bet is to demo as much as you can, and trust your own ears.

I think I may be convincing myself into having a third zone, can't afford the 7007 though.. refurb 7005 maybe.

I wish the denon AVR 3312/13 had multichannel audio input!

Having a medium sized lounge I need bigger speakers for the front than the A10 😉

I'm going to hit the Bristol Show this weekend if I can, all my interested parties are there... except Marantz!

I'm pretty sure I'll be keeping the PM6004 to drive the fronts too...

I've just loaned a pair of Kef Q35's from a friend and now have confirmed the gaping hole in the lower mid from my 914's.

However therange on them wasn't great.

I'm not too bothered by high end - that only leads to fatigue - but I was missing the bottom end.

But the result was what I expected andit was refreshing to hear midrange :O

My buddy is getting convinced that I'll end up with something close to studio monitors in my lounge!

He's not too wrong really, I have actually added Kef LS50's to my list...
 
You should demo the MAs RX6 and RX8. They sound incredible with the 7005. The 7007 will be very close on stereo 🙂

Hi,

I'm currently testing a NR1603 against my old Sony DA50ES and cannot hear much of a difference in direct mode. I'm considering getting a PM7093 as Amp to connect to or a fullsize SR6007 or SR7007.

You say the sound of the NR1603 is very much like a SR7007? Hard to imagine as it's a very digferent price range. But well... Featurewise the NR is all that I need, so just wondering if you could elaborate on the differences in sound quality? Not talking about power, as the NR has enough for me too, so just wondering about quality...

Sorry I've been off task for a couple of weeks..

I finally made decisions and spent cash ..

Whilst rereading this I realise that PistolPete had his demo day at HIFIX, where I ended up one sunny Tuesday a couple of weeks back.

Great store, really great - everything I was wanting under one roof, great team too..... especially as I turned up for a demo and my replied email had bounced! But Kevin set me up in stella fashion and supplied a much needed cuppa, 2 hours of motorway builds a thirst!

I went to listen to the KEF Q series again as they had B-Stock and Ex demo available...

I have to say I'm glad I did as the 500's were a completely different sounding speaker from my Sevenoakes visit, room not withstanding.

Same amp, same demo CD.

I think they had a duff pair, thanks for the encouragement Pete, I persevered!

So I ended up listening to 500's and then 700's..

OMG! There was all the midrange I was missing....

The extra depth and height was really noticeable between the 2 models.

So it was an easy decision and Ex Demo 700's ended up in my boot.. along with a B stock 600c and a shiny new Oppo BDP103 ( a bit last minute but well worth the money)

A set of Q300's for rears and the amp were put on order and arrived 2 Tuesday so everything is settling in..

The Q700's have had a little head start but I know there will be some extra to come.

I took a slight U turn with the amp however and I reverted to my initial thoughts, which were Yamaha RX-A1020.

I think I would have been happy with the SR7007 but for the build quality and price... Yammy sounds silky smooth with the Kef's.. mmmm

So I now need to visit www.buyanewsubwoofer.co.uk as my 80watt MS308 is not happening..

Will I ever stop spending money??

I'm beginning to realise that..

Just bought a clearance Denon RCD-M38 for the bedroom and returned my Wharfedale Force 2080's to service..
 
Really pleased you gave them another go, and pleased you liked them second time round.

The Q700's are great speakers......enjoy!!!

Don't forget to biwire or bi amp them now........ :cheers:

They sound better and better everyday.. even more so now we've decorated, lol!

Really enjoying listening to all my old music and some new..

With the Oppo I can now play SACD and I have to say it sounds awesome... shame it's where it is.

Gonna have to make a choice regarding Bi-Amping i think.. I'll lose Zone 2... will try bi-wiring first - got plenty of Kelsey pro grade speaker cable to play with 🙂
 
Bi wiring made a big difference to my centre speaker, so I'd imagine it'll be great with the front two speakers too.

It seems that the easy adjust knob circuitry at the back of these speakers limit their ability (although the idea is a very good one). To hear them at their best, this circuitry needs to be bypassed and the only way you can do that is by bi wiring or bi amping the speakers.......

Let me know your thoughts once you've tried both ways.....
