Marantz SR-6007 or SR 7007... anyone got one?

I've got the SR7007 and previously the SR7005 - sound wise I've found very little difference. I also have the NR1603 for another room and the jump in power is clear between these two, but this is expected. They sound very similar though.

I'm currently testing a NR1603 against my old Sony DA50ES and cannot hear much of a difference in direct mode. I'm considering getting a PM7093 as Amp to connect to or a fullsize SR6007 or SR7007.

You say the sound of the NR1603 is very much like a SR7007? Hard to imagine as it's a very digferent price range. But well... Featurewise the NR is all that I need, so just wondering if you could elaborate on the differences in sound quality? Not talking about power, as the NR has enough for me too, so just wondering about quality...

So I should qualify my previous post and this response by saying that I don't see myself as an audiophile expert, but I know what I like and I don't spend too much time worrying about small differences between products.

I had the nr1603 in place in my lounge instead of the sr7007 briefly and therefore had a real world and day to day comparison watching tv and listening to music. The conclusion I came to was that there was indeed significant difference power and performance at moderate to higher volumes, but at lower volumes the tone and character was very similar.

I too have thought of placing a dedicated amp for music and I actually posses a pm7001ki, which I absolutely adore and have used in a dedicated stereo set up.

I actually asked marantz for their view on using such an amp for this purpose vs using a dedicated poweramp like the mm7025 and their view was very clear - use an mm7025 or mm7055. Part of the argument being that an mm amp has a massive power supply compared to the sr7007 and thus can drive speakers more effectively. Using a pm amp in direct power mode results in only benefiting from half the amp - ie you don't get any benefit from the previous-amp circuitry.

I'm going to look more closelynatbone of the mm amps butbwould be curious on any views here?

Yes I have one of these and I got after trading up for free from my old SR6004, you may well ask why wel my 6004 had the pop of death yes it is real and it drove ee and the local agent here in NZ bonkers as well trying to fine the cause, in the end I kept re setting it and taking a veido of me doing it to prove it really did exist, in the end it developed a new issue where you had a loud thump through the speakers and it would go in to mute, the only way to get it working again was to turn it off and then back on again.

OK so what is the 6007 like, well in short its miles better in sound than the 6004, set up through the new GUI is much easier with the only glitch being that it insists on setting the crossover at 40hz even with larg speakers, as recomended I have changed this to 80hz and its fine.

Speakers are Thepohny M4 mains (NZ Made) center is a Warfdale Evolution 2, Sub is Volodyne 10inch, and rears are Energy take 2.

Source is an OPPO BDP95, TV is a Panasonic 55inch LCD 3D.

As acomparson all I changed was the reciever and nothing else, from my point of listening all I can say is that there is more depth and definition with imaging far more defined than the 6004, Star Trek the sound leaps from the screen and when the ship enteres in to warp it is like where did that come from.

Music wise its far and away better Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon in SACD was allways good but you can hear so much more with the bass solid and defined, mid range is improved and trebble has lost some if the harshness that was evedent and annoying with the 6004, Adel is one example where this was evident when playing the Albert Hall Concert.

The remote has lost some features of the old as in not a learning unit so cannot drive other hardware, however it has improved in being less confusing.

Nice feature is that this has HDMI Pass throug in standby mode and you can set it the what input you want it to default to when in standby.

The set up was easy to follow and strightforward and no issues other than the odd Crossover setting, ther is no wirless kit with this but am using a Netgear unit that works just fine, ther was over an hour of updates as soon as I conected it and have had another since.

Airplay is a nice feature and it worked flawlessly with my iPad, as well as internet radio, being able to listen to all the old stations I miss from the UK is refreshing (ex pat british)

All I can say is I like it, what it will sound to you depends on speakers and your room, I have hard wooden timber floors etc and a lot of glass, but it sounds amazing.
