Marantz pm6005 enough power for floorstander?

Hi all, I'm considering either the q acoustic 2050i or dali Zensor 5 to go with the pm6005 but worry the amp isn't powerful enough to drive them. I'm a newbie to the world of hifi. Would stand mounter be better with that amp?

I do not know where you got the idea from that this amp does not have enough 'power'. It has plenty enough to drive either of the speakers you have mentioned.

Do you actually own it?

For your information standmounters tend (and I'm generalising here) to be more difficult for an amplifier to drive owing to their inherent inefficiency.

Totally agree - it does, however, beggar the question, how loud does he play music? If it's at club levels then both amp and speakers may fall short.

I don't own the amp yet I won't be playing music at anywhere near club levels! So, do you think the pm6005 and 2050i or Zensor 5 are a good combo? I'm also considering the Zensor 3. I listen to all sorts of music and will also use them for films. Total budget is about £700. I'm pretty confused what the best option is!

Perhaps a little more info might help like size of your room / listening distance from speakers / can you actually get to audition any of the kit you mentioned / do you want to buy new kit?

At the moment I can state that I have never heard the Zensors in any set-up but I have heard the 2050i's (although not powered by Marantz) and its a great sounding speaker that should fit easily into most setups, unless you have areally small room.

Oh, and what is your source going to be? Do you have one or has that too got to come out of the £700 kitty?

I see from another post your listening room is about 4x4m.

This is what I would do in your case, get the 'open-box' pair of Q Acoustics 2050i (google it) going for 399.95 and then buy the Rega Brio-R currently going on a well known auction site for £355 and you will have the basis for an excellent system - even if slightly over budget.

Failing that get the slightly older version of the Marantz (PM6004) for £235 - its just as good as the 6005 and you'll save enough for some speaker cables!

Or, for something completely different, look at the Rotel RA-10 for £349

Having both Marantz PM6004 and Q Acoustics 2050i's I can confirm that they work fine together and the PM6005 has a similar output. Normal listening levels are I understand under 12 o'clock on the volume control and I usually listen at about 10 o'clock. More than 12 o'clock then you might be OK in a detached house in the middle of a field otherwise you might get an ASBO!

Al, I'll probably go with the marantz amp, as they seem to get very good reviews and the ones you recommend are a bit over budget and there are a lot of good bundle deals on the Marantz. It's good to know it has plenty of power to run these speakers.

Cypher, thanks for giving me some more speakers to check out- I'll have a good read up on them.

Paul, good to know they go well together and give plenty of volume 🙂.

And now some reading to do!!! I'll post back if/when I've decided what to go for! Anymore suggestions are more than welcome!

I was having similar thoughts and went for a demo last week. I was expecting to get the 6005 but honestly it sounded awful, no life at all. I listened to other much more expensive amps which sounded amazing and then switched to the rotel ra10. Incredible. As good if not better than others more than double its price. I bought the rotel and I have monitor audio floorstanders. It has real depth and a massive soundstage, the marantz had neither.

If you can strech your budget go for the Roksan Kandy K2 much better and more powerfull amp than the Marantz .

They are more easily driven but unless you are attempting to use a low-power valve amp I wouldn't worry overly about it here. 🙂

I once tried to combine a Marantz PM6004 with my CD6004 (top machine) & Focal Chorus floortstander speakers...compared to my NAD C352 the sound was very poor and needed a lot of tweaking in order to get a bit of decent sound, couldn't believe my ears. I sold it back almost right away. I'm afraid the PM6005 won't sound differently...

To answer the op "Yes". I've been using the PM6400 with Kef Q500s for a couple of years and it has been fine, easily powerful enough. Whether you like the Marantz sound, if such a thing exists, you will only discover by listening!

I don't understand why people here are saying you need an amp with 150W per channel. If you listened at the sound levels that could produce you would be deaf in short order.

I can't argue with people who say they have listened to a Marantz and don't like what they hear. But then I've listened to a Kandy K2 and it was as dull as dishwater to my ears. Go and listen! Trust your own judgement not what people on here say.

I think this comes down to taste rather than power, the Nad has more power on paper, but I found it hollow sounding and slightly grainy treble, then I changed it to a used Marantz Pm7001 , found this to be more refined with a fuller midrange, the lowest bass was slightly less prominant, then the damn thing blew up, my fault.

I have heard a PM6004 drive a pair of MA BX5 to high levels, in a shop demo, without any sign of harshness, the 45w rating just like the rotel Ra10 ,40w is consevativley rated, they both house a substantial doughnout transformer

On the contrary, speaker sensitivity is not as important as its impedance - this will give you a better idea of how capable your amp will be in driving them.

I recently auditioned the PM005 with Tannoy Revolution DC6 T SE, source was CD 6005. I guess it sounded ok, but I thought it lacked weight. A PM8005 was then hooked up, which (imo) sounded much better. I guess that doesn't really answer your question, but might be of some use?

As long as you're not after constant disco like listening levels then the PM6005 has got sufficient power for 2050i and Zensor 5 speakers.

I think you should also consider used/discontinued amplification as nowadays around your budget I feel that you're more than likely to get a better return on your investment. Therefore I'll highly recommend Rotel's RA-1062 and the NAD C370. I believe the RA-1062's and the C370's quality of power will enable these amplifiers to grip, drive, energise speakers and ultimately perform to a much higher level at almost any comparable listening level. Alternatively pair either amplifier with Monitor Audio's BX5 speakers and you have a combination which rocks :rockout:

Btw, what source component/s and cables will you be using please?
