Marantz PM6004 trouble with phono stage

I just bought a 2nd hand Marantz PM6004 and found that only 1 channel of the phono stage appears to be working. That is, both phono connectors from the turntable work when either is plugged into the R phono input on the amp but neither work when plugged into the L phono input on the amp.

I can't think of anything else to try as I don't have any other turntable or amp.

I'd there something I could be overlooking ? I've contacted the seller an am waiting for a response.
