Marantz cd6004 modifications

Hi All , Ok just purchased a Marantz cd 6004 cd player , and was thinking of changing the standard IEC socket to a gold plated one,

I have had success in the past , changing my speaker binding posts from the base metal cheapo ones to gold plated , and at a reasonable price.

The Gold plated socket has terminal clamps rather than soldered , so it's easy enough to change. I'm hoping with a new powerchord (self made) wiiil tame the brightness a little.

As gold contacts seem to give a warmer sound ( I think so anyway )

Does anyone have any modding tips that have made a difference , and not cost a lot ?

Isolation feet , Platforms or anything else please feel free to put your suggestions forward.

Won't be taking my CD player apart unless it breaks!

Granite chopping boards under my speakers made a difference. Also a bottle of £5 wine is a cheap upgrade, music always sounds better after one of them!

Yes I have heard of granite chopping boards also employed under cd players .

And the mains IEC is two screws and a plug into the power board which just unclips .so it's not rocket science.

I remember years back enthusiasts cutting squash balls in half , and then using these under the cd player .

And then I think there was suborthane feet , and mission isoplat .

But I 'm not sure what;s new as I do not read What HI -FI as much as I used to .

What a great Forum . I see it's better to search the forum for answers to questions that have already been asked , than bore everyone with a subject that seems to be asked all to frequently.

Sorry but whats the point of this forum if hardly anyone helps wth suggestions .

What does your intelligence tell you will be the likely audible results of any of the mdifications that you have suggested? Such simple and cheap 'mods' would most likely have already been incorporated by the manufacturer if they were at all effective, so, unless you have an itch to tinker with the CD player, why not just leave it alone and enjoy the music?

If you think the CD player comes up short for some reason, sell it in standard form and upgrade it. If you start modding it, you will almost certainly devalue it.

Sorry, I don't see the problem. You didn't get a flood of answers that you wanted withing a couple of hours of posting? That seems to be rather self entitled. Consider the time zones and the number of posts made on the forum/replies to the average thread. Try to give it a least a day before bumping or complaining that you aren't getting enough help.

If you haven't already realized, the issue of cables and certain tweaks is rather divisive and often just leads to arguments, so it can feel like the forum is being baited when some of these questions come up.

By the way, I don't think it is unreasonable for posters to spend a few minutes researching something rather than expecting everyone else on the forum to do the work for them. It's not like a shop where everyone is waiting to serve you.

Of course, the most likely answer is that rather than spending on cables and tweaks, youi should've just put that same money towards a better CD player in the first place.

I don't think it will make any difference, also it will invalidate your warranty. What other items do you ahve in your system?

If its too bright why did you buy it?

Maybe the best option in your case would be to leave well alone , the miniscule modification you have in mind subjectively would make little diference on the whole. However the best form of address if it's a little bright is to adjust your systems treble response.

However some of us dont believe in the use of tone controls as it's just another way of degrading the signal from it's purest and most direct path.

A change of speaker cables may also be of benefit , or look into a better set of interconnects .

a much better option in IMHO than the one you have stated . Also as I 'am also new to the forum please be more patient when you post , answers will come . Hope this sound information helps your quest for a better less brighter sound.

Thank you DAYGLOWRED7 , I will have a think about it your suggestions sound fair , i will have a look itno my cabling chord chameleon silver plus interconnects could be the cause of the excessive brigtness , I will look into some that are not as bright sounding thank you.

Hi BIGH , using arcam alpha stereo amp , and castle durham speakers qed 79 strand speaker cable , just upgraded cd player from a rotel rcd 865 bx , bought it in 1990 so this is my first upgrade since.

Its a lot brighter compared to the rotel cdp .

Which Arcam I have the Alpha 3, I also have A Marantz 63SE. Castle Durham sound quite old? Think I heard them a bit like Wharfedale Dentons from what I remember?

These two sentences seem totally at odds with each other to me. :?

Tone controls add more active circuitry to the signal path whereas 'fine tuning' with cables - if you at all believe they have such properties beyond a certain point - does not.

It just seems odd that some audiophiles see altering tonality with the designed equipment tone controls as a bad thing, whereas arbitrarily changing cables in the hope of achieving the same is actively encouraged.

It's a budget marantz, good stuff I'm not knocking it but still budget so if you want less treble then turn the treble down a bit. I certainly turn source direct off and turn the bass up when I play dance music on my marantz.

OK I see, that has tone controls does it not? On my 3 they were very subtle and I hardly ever used them, Im surprised you find the Marantz bright. On ething the Arcam 3 did lack was bass, really with a new amp bass is so different, its like hearing some music for the first time.

Can you take the Marantz back? Can you demo cdp with your amp/speakers?

To be honest you maybe better off buying a used CDP.
