I finally got around to buying a hifi having demo'd various over the last few years. Got the above for £600 from Richer Sounds Cardiff yesterday. They have no demo room so said i could try it and would let me return it as long i keep it in perfect condition. Unfortunately the CD player does not recognise any CDs!! The sound is actually quite good through the ipod usb connection on the CD player. Quite a warm sound but I like that. I have previously enjoyed my demo of NAD amp with B&W 685. That had a more spacious sound than this setup (although I currently don't have speaker stands and it is all sat on my sideboard). Am keen to hear cd and speakers on stands.

Phoned Richer Sounds today about getting a replacement CD player. First of all got thorugh to the central helpline after the Cardiff branch did not answer. They said that I should take it back. I asked if they had any more stock. They said no and that I would have to speak to the cardiff branch. (not great customer service so far). I then phoned the cardiff branch about 10 times over the course of a few hours before they actually bothered to answer the phone. They then said they would send it back to Marantz to be repaired. I said that I would like a new one as it was faulty when I bought it. They said that they didn't have any stock or any on order, so they could offer an alternative. As I do not want an alternative I asked if they could get one from another store. They said that Bristol had one and that I could try phoning them. I asked if they could phone them. They begrudgingly agreed saying that they would be more likely to do it if I phoned them! So hopefully they will phone me back in the week and get me a new CD player. All in all pretty rubbish customer service! (I must admit that when I was in the store buying it the person that I spoke to was helpful and gave me good service, but since then...)

Anyway, looking forward to getting a CD player that plays CDs hopefully. Sticking with it as it is a very good deal. One thing I wondered is whether the CD player uses its DAC when the Ipod is connected through the USB port. The sound quality does seem very good. The bass seems quite good for fairly small speakers. Voices could be a bit more prominent although my sideboard ipod setup may well be affecting this.

Hi Dainewb,

I was sorry to read of the problems you are having with your CD player that you recently bought from our Cardiff store.

Of course, there is no problem exchanging this unit for you. So that I can ensure the necessary arrangements are already in hand please would you contact with your sale number from your receipt, and a telephone number? My e-mail address is john.p.clayton@richersounds.com

In the meantime, please accept my apologies for the obvious inconvenience caused, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Many thanks,

John Clayton

Thanks Mr Clayton, I certainly wasn't expecting a response from Richer Sounds! I'll email my details to you

I listened to the kef IQ5SE previously and found them very bright for my tastes. The Wharfedales have a much warmer sound so I think you would find them very different
