I've got a CD5001, which I'm pretty happy with, bought 2nd hand recently. But I really want a champagne gold coloured player and the CD7300 and CD5400 are 2nd hand options for around £60. I can't find any info on whether these are better or a step backwards or sideways though. I think the 7300 was pricier than the 5001 but I'm not sure. Has anyone put a timeline of release dates etc for Marantz on a website anywhere? I found one, but it stops in year 2000.

the more recent series of 5xxx, 6xxx,7xxx,8xxx have probably been running for 7/8 years with sequential models adding a digit, eg the 6 series started at 6001 and 5 improvements later has reached 6006. The 8 series is better than 7 series etc etc.

My best guess is that the 2nd hand models you mention don't match this sequencing at all, so you you probably really do need individual reviews on the models you mention.

Since no one has posted. I have not heard any of the models that you mention. From information I have found CD5001 and CD5400 share the same DAC chip and transport, namely CS4392 and KSS-213C. The CD7300 has a newer version of the DAC (perhaps higher model, not sure CS4396) and a completely different transport VAM1202.

I can not comment on sound quality/ reliability of these units as have no first hand experience. The CD7300 looks like a higher model but in all honesty I doubt you would be able to tell the difference in A/B comparisions especially between CD5001 and CD5400. Although, by looking at DAC chips alone one should not make such predictions. Given the same manufacturer it's likely that implementation was virtually same, hence minimal differences in sound quality.

As a way of deciding which one to go with I'd be inclined to look at condition and price first and foremost. That is of the colour you decide.

Thanks for that. I've since found that CD5400 was replaced by CD5001, with a few comments I've found suggesting there was very little difference apart from aesthetically, while CD7300 was more mid range compared to these two well received 'budget' (I hate that word) players.
