I've seen a couple of posts about mains cables and never really given them any thought!

Do quality mains cables make a big difference? All my equipment has seperate sockets as I've seen one topic about conditioners but I assume they are for people with one socket and an extension?

Sorry if the post seems a little thick as I'm slowly geeting upto speed with the techy stuff!

the question cannot be answered, some think they make a difference and some dont, some will swear they do and some will swear they dont..fwiw i think aftermarket mains cables are a money racket (i think the same about expensive hdmi cables) ..

Hi andyryan03

For optimum performance use standard (preferably moulded) mains cables. In the first instance plug all mains cables directly into the wall sockets. Avoid conditioners and if an extension block is needed then ones from Wilkinsons stores for a few £ do the job nicely.

All the best

The most effective and sensible thing to do, is clean all your plug connections with some brasso. If need be replace plug sockets with silver plated connections.

I will be making my own diy shielded mains cables on a sensible buget, I will post on here the results..

The big thing here is to try some high quality options on loan and see what you think of the differences. Depending on your equipment (what are you using?), its often worth using shielded mains cables with a mains filter. If you think about it logically, great quality shielded mains cables may carry the power supply from wall socket to equipment without picking up hum inbetween - and this helps - but why go to all this trouble if the mains quality going in isn't that great? It's the old "rubbish in, rubbish out" principle.

On the other hand if you use a mains filter to clean up the mains and then higher quality mains cables to carry that power from mains filter to components, you're onto a winner. Of course this approach isn't necessary if you have very clean mains so it really is about some experimentation! Alex
