Magnepan 3.7i Emotiva SA 250

Doess anyone have experience on amplifiers with magnepan 3.7i - the list of consideration so far is.....

Sanders Magtech

Audio gd - master 3

Emotiva SA - 250

I realise they are hungry for power but budget is also an issue! Emotiva also do the xpa -1 with 1000 w into 4 ohm..........

Just want an opinion before shelling out for 500 wpc (4 ohm) and finding its not enough !

Hi Paul and welcome.

That's a serious set-up you're building there! I'm not familiar with the amps you're considering (you're in the States, right?), but I guess the Magtech's 900 W into 4 Ohm would be a great place to start. And Mr. Sanders gives you a free 30-day trial (including the return shipping IIRC), so not much of a risk. In case it would prove lacking in the long run (not likely IMO), you can add a second unit, and go for 2000 W/4 Ohm! *shok*

If budget is a little tighter, and 500 W/4 Ohm can do, you could also consider a pair of Hypex NC500 monoblocks (Acoustic Imagery, or Nord [that's Colin, a fellow forumite]). Price per watt will be similar to the Magtech's, probably better.

Keep us posted on the result, anyway. I'm most interested in what you end up with!

I can vouch for the ability of the Magtech to drive difficult loads. I use one with my Martin Logan Montis, which has horribly low impedance at high frequencies. The Magtech does a great job: it produces a huge, immersive, 3D sound with lovely smooth treble. I have the system in a room 5.25 x 5.25m, and I do play quite loud on occasions, mainly symphonic and opera. Even at very high volumes in my room, there's no hint of distortion.

Buy with confidence.

*good*

Thanks - in UK but happy to try esoteric stuff!

My good friend runs 2 sanders magtechs into sanders electrostatics - very impressive but at £ 4000 + each even 1 is relatively expensive - ive read good things (and bad) about the emotiva stuff and wanted to know if people had experience with it as i am struggling to find a better buy ( 1$ per watt) but will also look into your recommendation

OK, so you've heard what the Magtechs are capable of.

I'm afraid I know nothing about Emotiva, so I can't help you there. If the specs look good, then maybe you can buy with confidence. Dunno.

With Maggies, I'd be thinking about Class D amps, such as DocG suggested. You could get two mighty monoblocs for less than £2K.

Or a dual mono for just under a grand: look here!

As for the Emotiva: is there a dealer in the 'hood? Home demo feasible?

PS: we need more people with exotic taste here to cheer the place up a little! *wink*

Ah yes, much cheaper than I thought. *acute*

Yes, almost makes me want to start all over again and go more exotic. *crazy*

Those Nord amps look very good vfm but they will open the ususal debate of Class D vs Class A!

They're not class D, they're Hypex Ncore (wire with gain, and all that...)! *wink*

BTW, what front-end do you use, Paul? (Just curious)

I haven't been fortunate to hear neither the Emotiva nor Sanders, but have read very good things about both... if it were me, I would probably go with the Sanders as I do trust Matt49's judgement, not to mention sound advice from Doc.

Great to have a bit of exotica on the site at last... more please.
