Hi

I have noticed that my Sony STR-DA2400ES AV Receiver has started showing LPCM in the display window when connecting my PS3 via HDMI

I have tried to find LPCM in the operating manual but it is not listed - please can anybody explain what this means and is it normal !?!?!

Many thanks

Steve

It's uncompressed audio (Linear Pulse Code Modulation, to be precise). Your PS3 is decoding the sound formats from your Blu-rays etc and outputting them as PCM. Also. some Blu-rays include PCM as a format - and as it's uncompressed, it can sound mighty fine (though does take up a massive amount of disc space).

Newer PS3s also allow audio formats to be bitstreamed in their native format so that a receiver can decode them; in this case you'd see, for example, Dolby True HD coming up on your Sony receiver.
