Loud clicking noise from HDD ?

Hey

Bought a 3.5" verbatim External hdd from hmv today for 49.99 but its only showing at 931gb.

It came with a nero back up file, but thats only 115mb, so were is the rest? Surely 70gb is not the operating system?

Whats going on.

The difference results from a non standard measurement for how many bytes make up a gigabyte. The manufacturers of hard drives use the term gigabyte to mean 1,000000000bytes (1000 bytes = 1 kilobyte, 1000 kilobytes = 1 mb, 1000mb = 1 gb) but operating systems like windows use a different way, i.e. 1024b = 1kb, 1024kb=1mb, 1024mb = 1gb so 1gb = 1073741824 bytes.

I'm sure others on this site have mentioned this before. You are not being swindled as such, it is just rather confusing.

I think that it comes from Windows thinking that 1 kb is 1024 i.s.o 1000

So the error is 1000x1000x1000 divided by 1024x1024x1024, which gives you 0.931

Yes found out it has to do with mb and gb and how windows transforms them like the other poster said, 1024x1024 ect.

Was just expecting to see 1tb 1000gb

Oh well, still a steal at 49.99 and had a b-day card with a 10enner on it so 39.99

Not that small, it will fit in my pocket. and its a usb drive with no need for mains, so its quite a big size really.

1 Tb would be a terabit, a Gb a gigabit. Both represent a factor 8 less space than a terabyte (TB) or gigabyte (GB).

I don't think a tb or gb even exists, but if they would, they should be even smaller than a Tb or Gb.

Can I ask another dumb question

, as this is my first big HDD.

When I was transfering about 186gb of files from my passport drive the new 1tb drive was making this really loud ticking, so much so I could hear it over the TV.

Is this normal ?

Hi,

The missing 70 meg is the format information. The empty, unformatted drive has a capacity of 1TB, with the 931GB available after formatting.

HDDs never give you their full rated capacity- the format itself takes up space!

Are you using an external power supply with the drive? If not, could be the computer isn't delivering enough power via USB.

Clicking hard drives can sometimes be the reader head bouncing off the disk (just before failure). I'd take it back straight away.

It depends exactly how it's clicking, all hard drives make a noise, usually a fast sort of rattling noise. A distinct click is something else though.

Yeh its not a whir or anything it was like a loud tap dripping water.

very fast, that's the just the usual hard drive noise they make when reading or writing then, they all do that.

I know some making what sounds like a very faint grinding noise, but never heard anything this loud

Just spoke to someone in IT dept were I work. He advised the the HDD plater and its about to go and back everything up and take it back. If you knock on your desk ,thats how loud it was, he said that is the platter bouncing off the spinner or something he said. So back it goes.
