Hi there I have been looking at getting an av receiver and have £150 (but can manage a little bit more)

The main one I was looking at was the Yamaha rxv373 but there is also the Sony str dh820 and then there is onkyo .........I was wondering what people on these forums reccomend as a good starter av amp

Will be used for TV,film,PC,ps3

At the moment I have 2 pairs of speakers (do plan on upgrading at some point)

Wharfdale 7.1 and tanoy mx1

Thanks for any reeplies

I would recommend this, if you can extend your budget a bit:

Maybe this : Onkyo TXNR414 ?

Thanks for the responses.....

Why the 473 over the 373 ? And would it be worth the extra as I have no apple devices and no free Ethernet connection

And would the onkyo be better than the Yamaha and Sony ? Or about the same?

Too many to choose from lol

The 473 sounds more cohesive than the 373. Sony 820 is actually a class above the 373, and more in league of the 473. I would strongly recommend demoing your options before making a purchase.

I am pretty unlikely to demo them as I am probably going to buy online .......

The Yamaha 473 looks great but is a bit expensive (I might be able to manage £200 for something new but don't want to chance on exdemo /used)

The Yamaha 373 is £170 now and not such a great deal ,especially when compared to the Sony 820 at£150 ,or the onkyo 414 also at £150

So I am now more tempted with the .....

Sony -which I think is the better machine ,with better sound

Onkyo 414 -which has more features like Ethernet port and optional USB wireless dongle

Both are only £150 so are looking most likely it will be one of these (unless people reeccomend a better one )

.I was also planning on getting a 5 year warranty so I am not too concerned about the questionable reliability of onkyo

When it comes to AV receivers, an ex-demo is perfectly fine. Bear in mind that every AV receiver has its own sound signature & can sound very different to one another, especially in synergy with the speakers. So a demo is always highly recommended. Good luck!

I have found a place selling the american version of the Yamaha 473 ( the Yamaha 4065) with a UK Adaptor new for only £199 , would it be a god idea to try that out or am I likely to have problems with a us import with adaprtor?

Its from peter Tyson online / amazon .I have never used this shop either but they have good reviews and take PayPal , if anyone has any experience of them I would like to hear

Peter Tyson are very respected sellers & many forum members have had good dealings with them in the past. Give them a ring & ask about the product & the UK adapter. American models usually require a voltage transformer which can be noisy. I suspect this particular model is from the EU if only an adapter is needed.

Specifically, ask them about warranty. If warranty is an issue, I would any day prefer an ex-demo model with UK warranty than this one.

Been looking a little bit more ,what about the Pioneer VSX-922, how would this compare to the Yamaha 473 ?

The Pioneer is very good as well:

Both Pioneer & Yamaha have very different sound signatures. Pioneer is a bit on the bright side whereas Yamaha is a bit on the warm side. It is definitely worth demoing ro know what you prefer.

Peter Tyson got back to me and said ....
All of our stock is supplied by Yamaha UK and as such carries the UK 2 year
manufacturers warranty with all features operational in the UK.

I messaged them back as I forgot to ask about the us/Europe voltage converter or not

I bought the Yamaha 4065 so fingers crossed its the same as the 473 ,should know on tuesday

Deal here for this one:
