Listening in the dark?

Not since I bought the original LP of Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds, and back then it was pretty scary with only a glow from my tuner-amp to keep us company!

As it happens, I'm not mad on blackout for TV viewing either, though everyone seems to think it is required for serious home cinema setups.

I think that is a really good point nopiano, I guess it it really depends what you're listening to. I've got a few albums that are far too intense for "black out" listening, opposed to tracks I've previous dismissed, all of sudden coming alive in the dark!

Sometimes. Not often an option these days due to various circumstances, but did it for the 1st time in ages the other night. Was good.

I enjoy a good listening session in the dark, but haven't found many opportunities recently. In the dark there are less distractions from the music and I find it really easy to become immersed in what I'm listening to. Currently in the process of a flat move, but once its finished I'm hoping to have a few listening sessions with the lights turned off.

Last night, I had a rye smile (sorry for the pun) to myself, because at the very moment that I opened your thread, all my power went off. The plumbers were working late at the chapel next door and cut through a power cable, knocking off the whole side of the street!

My evening was mostly spent in the dark, with only the glow of the embers and a candle to break the gloom...and the music was from an iphone playing Radio Paradise. It took NIE over three hours to sort the problem.

If you mean completely dark, ie you cant see anything other than the lights on the hifi, then no as I find that a little too much.

But usually, I just have a small dimly lit lamp, or I open the blinds and let the light from street lamps gently 'warm' the room - very relaxing!

Hi,

War of the Worlds is immense when it's dark in the room. So much ambience seems to be created.

Another I listen to in darkended conditions is "Sacred Spirit - Chants and Dances of the Native Americans".

Perhaps limiting sight hightens hearing (perceived or not).

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.

Well done for reminding me about Sacred Spirit. I love it but haven't played it for ages, that will now change. 🙂

Yes sometimes and usually with headphones but occasionally with speakers too. When you have no visual stimulation it's easier to fully focus on the sounds. It's a much more immersive experience and I tend to notice more of the detail in music which usually pass me by.

Well it works for me I always listen in the dark when possible or with my eyes closed when it is light .

Another thing I find myself doing without even thinking about it is touching the sides of my listening chair on the edges to feel the vibrations caused by the music ,also removing my shoes and feeling the vibration through my feet from the floor.

Even when played at reasonable sound levels the room transmits the music to me via the vibrations and it adds another level of realism to my musical experience . *i-m_so_happy*

I have also noticed many musicians and singers perform with their eyes closed .

Ha ha

This takes me back to being a teenager. Me and a mate used to listen to 'Heaven and Hell' by Vangelis in the dark.

The Hell side is fantastic!
