LG giving up on 8K TVs

Aside from the lack of content...

Given that most (in the UK at least) either don't sit close enough or go big enough to fully benefit from 4K, 8K is largely pointless in a domestic setting anyway.

Then there's the limitations of the human eye.

I can tell the difference, though there are limitations - particularly with older films. I love Spinal Tap, but the 4k release was the first where I didn't really feel there were any worthwhile gains - and with many older films it's HDR, not 4k, that gives the bigger gain to my eye.

I'm basically a doubter as to whether older films will benefit from being 8k'd up, especially anything with a lot of grain. Newer stuff, who knows? I know that films and TV often tended to be recorded in higher resolution than their intended broadcast rates, but have no idea whether 8k is now a standard for programme- and film-makers.

But as screens keep getting bigger...
