Im after a new LCD or Plasma TV; but cannot decide on which one to buy; im after a 46" + screen and my budget is approximately £1500 (but would consider paying a bit more for the right set). I watch a mixture of both HD and SD content through Sky HD, as well as plenty of DVD's and Blu-Ray discs through a Sony BDP-S350 BD player; my current 42" Philips LCD set is decent, but 3 years old, isnt full HD and motion smearing is apparent when watching football and other fast moving scenes which really annoys me. I am constantly reading the reviews on the What Hi-fi website and other web sites but just cant make my mind up; does the perfect TV set actually exist in this price range? ... Please can someone give me some help???

Thanks

Andy

Hi,

Plasma is inherently better at handling motion than LCD, despite all of the advances in recent years. There are plenty of 46-50" sets within your budget. I'd hold out for the soon to be released 50" Panasonic V10. List price is something like £1,700. It shouldn't be too hard to find it selling for around £1,500.ÿ

Great; ill check out the Panasonic when it arrives then; any idea when this will be??? Ive just been reading about it on the net; its 600hz, which on paper at least should handle motion pretty well.

Ive also been looking at the Pioneer LX5090; despite being a few hundred quid over budget and an older model; do you know much about this set? is it any good with football and fast moving scenes in movies etc??

I heard May but I don't know how reliable that is. Don't get hung up on the 600Hz thing, it's just marketing buzz. It just means that the pixels can switch very quickly, which is something that plasmas have always done rather well.

I own a Pioneer LX5090 and I'd definitely recommend it if you can stretch your budget. From what I hear it's still better than all of the 2009 sets released so far. Football looks great. Movies look great.ÿ

Great; thanks for your help; i was also looking at the Sony KDL 52W4500 LCD but i think ill take your advice and go for plasma instead as i watch alot of football.

Ill see how far i can stretch my budget and try and get the Pioneer; but if not, i think the Pana sounds like a good cheaper option.

Kind Regards

There is also the Panasonic P50G10 model, around £1300-1400. the 42" got 5*'s on this site. The V10 has more bells and whistles, but it's basically the same panel and PQ. The Pioneer is the best plasma around, though if you can afford it.

The Pioneer 5090 models are now increased in price also. I picked mine up from RS for £1729 with Free 5 Year Warranty. The 5090 remains as arguably the best HDTV you can buy right now. It is superb with sports.I watch alot of football on Sky Sports HD and it is stunning, motion is spot on.

I really would wait and check out the V10 before buying a G10. Bells and whistles aside, Panasonic has stated that the V10 will be its best 2009 TV in terms of picture quality. It's also extremely good looking (judging by the photos anyway).

Pioneer Kuro 5090 or Samsungs 46B7020W. I just had a lengthy dem of the samsung and have to say it is absolutely superb. I own a 9g Kuro but would find it very difficult to choose between the two, unless the extra 4" are a deciding factor. The Samsung is phenomenal on SD, I've never seen better non-hd pictures on 40"+ size tv's, not even from philips. I'll start a separate thread on the Samsung later.
