Lack of bass with standmounts vs floorstanders?

I just bought some wharfedale diamond 8.3 floor-standing speakers and did a quick comparison against my 9.1's...

they had far punchier (I mean massively noticeable) bass compared to my 9.1's.

is this due to the increased cabinet size with the 8.3's or because my 9.1's currently sit on drawers rather than on proper stands (I've yet to get stands for them)?

Hi Oli,

I've had floorstanders, but now I am addicted to Standmounters (first Dynaudio 52se, now B&W 805s). In my experience a good stand is very essential. Then you get very fast, agile but still punchy bass. Which in my opninion cant be beaten by floorstanders in the same price range.

When I changed amplication with the Dyn's, I also had to get new stands as my then stands with the dyn's just made the bass and mid muddy. When I got a pair of partington heavi's things went ok again. So in my opinion proper stands will get things fixed for you. If you check the review section on What HiFi you can see some proper ones (Soundstyle Z 2, Atacama nexus) for a reasonable price. And I would fill them with sand (you can get a bag off birdcage sand at your local petshop) or leadshot. This made a huge difference with my first stands.

cheers for the advice, renewed my hope!

so, some soundstyle z2's and a bag of sand? sorted!
