Hi,

I am going to order a new plasma for SD watching (to switch to full digital TV in coming weeks) as well as DVD (and at some point Blu Ray) - I do not game. I also have a decent surround sound system and so will not pay too much attention to sound quality of the TV.

The Pioneer Kuro is fairly "cheap" right now, but apparently the new Panasonics are great as well. Main questions are:

  • Is the Kuro too "old" now, and should I go for full HD anyway as I will be getting Blu Ray eventually?
  • Is the only difference between the PZ80 and PZ85 the sound quality (in which case splashing on the 85 over the 80 is unnecessary in my case)
  • Is it really worth getting the PZ800 over the 80 or 85 in my situation considering the price difference?
  • Which one of these 4 would be best for someone in my situation?

Thanks for your help/recommendations!

The Pioner fans would say the 428 is one of the best SD PQ available. And its HD PQ is very good indeed. I'm sure you wont be disappointed with it.

Whether the PZ800 can match it's quality? dont know, havent seen one and no reviews out either.

I have to say that even though the pioneers been around ans it isnt 1080p its still the better telly, and i dont know of anyone who can tell the difference between hd ready and full hd when viewed a sensible distance back (over 8 feet). HD ready tellys are also better on standard tv, which lets face it, is still going to be around for a while.

One thing I've noticed with the Kuros is that blacks still look black even in well-lit rooms.

Other plasmas tend to look a sort of greenish-grey unless used in a darkened room, which tends to somewhat negate the black level advantage of plasma over LCD.
