Hi, I'm hoping for some advice on these speakers.

I'm looking to change my speakers in the next 4 weeks or so. I've got a Denon 1910 with Kef 1005.1 speakers, which are about 7 years old now. I've also got a Sony BDP760.

I was initially going to get the 3005's but, I saw a thread some days ago on here where David from Frank Harvey mentioned that he believed that speakers do well with good amplification. He gave the analogy of the kef 3005 speakers sounding better with more expensive amps than say the £400 to £500 bracket, although, they sound good with the lower priced amps they will be better with more expensive/more capeable equipment. Would I be better to consider the 2005's against the 3005's and save myself a few quid?

I'm unsure about a lot of home cinema and I both rely on and am grateful for the detail given on this forum and indeed the magazine. So, if you guys could give me a thought or two it would be appreciated.

My room is 14' x 12'.

Thanks

i have the onkyo tx-sr605 receiver it cost £400 and the kef 3005se and its absolutley superb just make sure you use good cables QED anniversary silver XT is what i use and sony bdp s350 blu ray player

Your Denon 1910 should work very well with the 3005SE package - it's a great amp, and more than good enough to get the best out of those lovely KEF eggs! I know mine get along well!

And second what Bips said - good speaker cables are crucial. I use Chord Carnival Silverscreen (which made a night-and-day difference over my old bundled wire), but there are plenty of good alternatives at reasonable prices. See here.

Yes you would get more out of the Kef 3005se when using a mid level av amp like the 2310 , but your Denon will run them fine. Ive got some Quad-lites and im using an Onkyo 606 and that sounds great, but i would love to hear them on the end of 876 or better.I think you need an audition really, and if you find that you need a more expensive amp to run the Kef 3005se then trade up or buy in a package and sell on your other kit. I feel the step from the 3005se is well worth the extra, an alternative would be the discontinued Tannoy Arena-lites if you can still get them to me they sounded better than the Kefs, cleaner crisp dialogue and more musical. So try and demo and let us know of any other speakers you may be considering.

the 2005 satelites are also good.but you can get more 3D sound effect with the 3005's.and the sub on the SE version is better tham the sub on the 2005

i have the onkyo 606 running my Kef 2005.3 and its fine. What i also did was upgrade the Center Speaker to the 3005se it sounds fantastic as the 2005.3 CP is just another egg. They do sell the CP from the 3005se separate

Thanks for your thoughts guys.

The speaker cabes I use are QED Silver Anniversary XT for the fronts and QED micro for the rears.

The reason for sticking with Kef eggs is down to the wicked fairy. She doesn't mind me spending the cash on them, in fact she's urging me to buy the 3005's over the 2005's as I will regret it later if I don't. However, she's particular about our living-room looking good so the Kef eggs fit in with her outlook. I haven't even bothered mentioning say Q-Accoustics 2010's as I know that I'd get the rolling pin!!

I live in Glasgow and there is a store called Audio Merchants who offer good service and advice so, I'll take myself in for listen.

Cheers

The 3005 system is a better speaker package, the sub in particular improves the sound enough to justify the step up. David at Frank Harvey is correct though the speakers have a lot to give and a higher quality amplifier will not be out of place drive the 3005. This is pretty much the same for all KEF speakers.

You will be fine with your Denon and the step up from the 1005 will be a large one.

Thats good to know. I wasn't able to change the speakers last year when I got the amp and bluray player so, I'm looking forward to getting better performance.

Thanks all for the advice, I'm reassured now.
