Andrew Everard:Yes, that's about right - the rears only supply ambience, and if they were as loud as the fronts would prove very distracting.
sorry andrew i just seen your post , what with all these shenanigans , ive got it sorted (well more sorted) now anyhow

Just a couple of additional thoughts...........I'd say that the addition of a sub would have a huge effect, even though you have floorstanders - without one, the crossover setting is irrelevant, surely? If you have a 5.1 set-up, don't choose Neo 6 processing! It's for people who have a surround back speaker(s).

hi sorreltiger , in the absence of a sub , what level do you think i should have the crossover frequency set too ? its default is 60 , should it be zero ? or is that irrelevant anyway ? anyone ? thanks...

Just to check, if you're running the system without a subwoofer...

- The LFE/Bass Out should be set to Front

- All speakers should be set to Large

- The Crossover Freq setting will then have no effect at all.

But I still think it'll sound even better with a sub!

i can see this is going to take a bit of effort to get just right , very impressive though , even without the sub , i wouldnt call the yamahas menus intuitive , thats for sure , but ill give it a few hours attention now and see whats what , thanks folks..

yep , done that andrew , better again , cheers , i fully intend to get a sub , but it wont be for a few weeks , the "equalizer" options look daunting , any pointers as to how they should be set ?

I think with that yamaha you can set frequency crossover for each speaker.at least choose a different crossover for fronts and rears.fronts set to large.backs you can choose something above 60.But has Andrew mentioned it should be fine with all large.

for your speakers, if you want to call out the midrange proeminency they can sometimes have, you could turn a bit down the bands in the middlle, just to get a more rounded sound.but you would only notice it much more with music than with movies.Flat will also work.

No, without a subwoofer there's no point at all using the crossover settings. They're irrelevant.

thanks guys , the system is sounding pretty good now , the only thing i cant seem to figure , is when i play music , using two channel stereo on the amp , and i switch to puredirect mode , the bass is not there , strange , ive obviously got something set incorrectly , i cant find the factory reset option ,there is an option to "clear the assignment of all keys" , i wonder if thats a factory reset ??

a) Have you turned the bass up in the tone controls? These are bypassed when in Pure Direct mode

b) Has the receiver set any equalisation for the front speakers? This will also be bypassed in Pure Direct.

c) If it sounds pants with Pure Direct engaged, don't use Pure Direct!

i havnt touched the tone controls , the bass is there even when using pure direct for movies , its only when using pd on two channel stereo the bass is gone , before i added the extra speakers , the bass was great with the same settings ..

a friend of mine tinkered with the equalizer settings last night , it greatly improved movies , not sure what else it did..

ill keep tinkering anyway , music playback while not using pd is very good , so its not a big deal , ill hopefully have this thing sussed before the weekend is over
